    Modified choke

As some of you might have seen, I recently bought a Remington Wingmaster for $235 out the door

I was unsure of what choke it had until I picked it up tonight
It has got a modified choke

Is there any shells that I should not run through a modified choke??
Could I run slugs or steel shot??

I have not shot this gun and it will mostly be seeing Federal multipurpose

Here is a link to the epic saga

You can shoot just about anything through a modified choke except solid 12 ga balls (what used to be called "punkin balls") and solid copper slugs. Foster-type lead slugs like Remington "Sluggers" and Original Brennecke German slugs are OK. Modified is a little tight to usually get the best accuracy, but some modified guns shoot some slugs quite well.

The barrel isn't specifically made for steel shot unless it is a recent gun, but I wouldn't worry about shooting steel in an 870. The worst thing that could happen is that the steel, especially large sizes, might "peen" the choke a little more open. I doubt that this would happen; it's happened mostly with full chokes in thin-walled double barrels. But if it did happen and affected your shooting badly (not sure why it would), 870 barrels aren't that expensive, or you could have choke tubes fitted, including one specifically for steel.

    Enjoy your 870!

Modified for lead = full choke for steel shot. In the latter half of duck season, I shoot a modified choke since the birds tend to be a bit gun shy. In the 12, you really shouldn't shoot anything larger than about BBB anyway. Modern steel shot wads are quite thick and the shot is relatively soft for what it is.. You shouldn't have too many issues u sing that 870 for hunting with Steel.

I'd buy a few different kinds of slugs and if you are concerned that they will go through the choke, I'd cut them open and see if I could "push" the slug through the barrel with a rod to see what it feels like and see if it is really too large or if it will go through with just a little bit of pressure.

There are many aftermarket barrels for the 870 with choke tubes fitted.. and you can even likely find a slug only rifled barrel for shooting Sabot slugs if you want..

Great gun for the price!! Older 870s are the best.

Check around and you can pick up a skeet only barrel for 60-80 bucks. If you want to, you can come out to the skeet clinic to learn how to shoot clays with it!

This might help you understand what different levels of choke will do.

Results for lead vs. steel covered in post above, so no need to repeat. FWIW, Modified chokes are shoing up more and more on defensive shotguns but more to help improve patterns with shot charges than to improve accuracy with slugs. As called out above "rifled slugs" through the Modified choke should be no sweat.

Barrels are relatively cheap, and I'd consider a 26 or 28 inch with choke tubes to be an excellent all around choice across sporting disciplines and hunting.

Enjoy the heck out of your gun, you've got a good one.
