Got a problem with a brand spanking new 870

Greetings everyone. I'm still excited that I got my new 870 express 7 shot out of jail last week, but I ran into a big problem.

I'm also new here to Calgun and I want to give everyone a warm welcome to the shotgun section.

Anyways, I took an outing to the range to run some rounds through my new 870.

Problem is that every few rounds, after firing, my 870 will jam very bad, and I mean very bad, I would pull the trigger (BOOM) then when I try to pump it, it wont budge at all.

I couldnt pump it back to the point the range master came over, took my 870 and gently tapped the buttstock agianst the ground, and the shell finally came out.

I'm kinda sad that this happens very frequently with my new 870 that I just bought and I thought was to hell and back reliable. Anyone know where to look first?

Mine did that when it was new, does it less and less the more I shoot it. Other thing to check is that the cap on the magazine tube is tight. if the barrel is not seated all the way back, the hammer can lodge itself against the firing machanism and it wont pump until it is shaken enough to be unstuck.

What ammo? Mine doesn't like high "brass" steel headed shells. They stick in the chamber.

Mine did the same thing, so I feel your pain. Good news is that a wad of steel wool, a dowel , some oil, and an electric drill will fix the problem. Follow AIPPI's instructions and you will be busting doubles in no time.
We will do as we will do because I am me and you are you.

Plus 1 on the polishing of the chamber. I never used a dowel or drill however just a small strip of scotchbright then steel wool on my finger and it's never jammed since couple years and plenty of shells through.

It seems the recent 870 Express models suffer from a lack of polishing on the inside---particularly the barrel chamber---polish away!

                      Thanks for the reply

I do have the magazine cap and barrel securly installed.

I've never tried polishing the bore of a shotgun, I always thought shotgun barrels are simple, how can they get stuck cases?

The ammo I am shooting is the Remington trap loads I bought at bass pro. 2 3/4 # 7 1/2 shot.

I think it has more to do with the choice of finish on the gun. The rough texture you feel on the outside of the gun is carried into the chamber. All you're doing is polishing the chamber to the roughness won't bite into the shell when you fire it!! Follow Aippi's directions ....

cant believe nobody flamed him yet for not doing a search!

this will stop happening with a few hundred rounds down the pipe....but the easiest thing to do is polish that chamber. A brand new 870 action will be just plain stiff as well.

breakdown, lube, chamber polish, lots of dry cycling, fire a few hundred rounds, clean, lube and then you are good to go for a long time

I had one that had an under spec chamber that would not allow you extract fired rounds... The Remington warranty center actually had to run a chamber reamer in mine and enlarge the rim cut to allow the gun to function properly... This was on a new 12 gauge Wingmaster BTW...
