custom ear plugs for shotgunning....

I'm looking to move up to a custom set of ear plugs for skeet shooting.... anyone have a good source? what price range can I expect to budget for? I've seen the Radians "custom" ear plugs, but at $15 a set, I'm sure that can't be all that great? also, what NRR should I be looking at for shotgunning?

I went to my local audiologist and had them take a mold of my ear canal and bought a set of westone musician plugs for when I ride my motorcycle and shoot. They came with a 25 decible filter for riding and a solid plug for shooting. They were $180 and worth every penny.

Your best ear protection is the muffs, however, I cannot wear them when shooting shotgun as they hit the stock and ding it up. They might not work for you either, you'll need to try some out. I use the muffs exclusively for handgun shooting though as they do offer the best protection. (The entire area around the ear 'hears', not just the drum, so the more protection you have, the better.)

I use the custom ones that you are asking about for shotgun. I got them at the Raahauge's Sports Fair in 2010 and the cost was $50. Takes about 20 minutes to fit, then you pick them up after a couple of hours. So you should prolly fit them upon arrival so that they are ready when you leave....where ever you go. I also opted for the leash as they hang around the neck and are less likely to be lost that way. The leash is fairly long, so I just tied it in a knot at the correct length for me. It's up to you though.

The Radians are total garbage. I still have some of the material stuck in my ear from a bad batch that didn't cure correctly (from August!). After attempting to contact the company through multiple channels, they never responded. Waste of money and potentially dangerous.

Yeah, I second going to your local audiologist. Call around and some of them are very familiar with shooter and what you're looking for. You can get the fancy ones that allow you to hear speech but not sure if you need that. I went with a basic pair that works great at reducing the noise and were very comfortable.

Get the foams from Walmart!! They are 32-33 NRRs and disposable. The molded ones will get dirty in the long haul. And I just don't like the idea of licking them for lube to get them in your ears!! Just think of all the bacteria on the plugs every time you have to suck on them to get 'em in your ears!!

LOL I have had mine for 15 years never licked them once,lol thats funny!
saying that I do need a new pair seems like they dont fit the same anymore.

All the guys I see at the range with the fitted ones ALWAYS put 'em in their mouth with a quick suck then stick 'em in their ears!!!

You didn't go to a doctor for that? wtf.

I didn't have that problem with my radians, but they're still crap. While I was molding them and letting them set up they worked great. The next day they had shrunk slightly(or something) and I could never get them to fit right.

As far as bacteria and junk building up... you guys know that you can wash them off, right?

I have not licked mine once either and my original pair are from 2001. I also have a pair from 2010....your ears do change once in awhile, so it is advisable to update every so often.
