    stance?

I was at the range yesterday and I seen this man shooting with the stock under his arm.I guess youd say from the hip. Im new to shotguns only had mine for 9weeks. Ive shot it every week since Ive had it. Is there a reason or advantage to shooting that way? He was kinda of a small dude I thought that have something to do with it.
    Thanks

      ><

First off, was he hitting anything? If not then he was doing it 1000% wrong.

If he was hitting consistently....he has mastered the art of pointing a shotgun from that mounted position.

Shooting from the hips is really nothing more then a trick shot!! I think it is dangerous to shoot from the hips anywhere else other then the range. And I think a lot of ranges don't allow shooting that way.

In reality there is no difference shooting from the shoulder and from the hips!! But you'll have to master shooting from the shoulder first!! Let me explain ...

The reason I say you have to master shooting from the shoulder is if you don't know how to lead the bird shooting from the shoulder or you won't know what to look for from the hips. If you do hit a bird from the hips it'll only be pure luck!!!

Imagine this! Once you figure out how much lead with the proper technique to break the clay, all you have to do is figure out how much to float the bird. If a particular bird is shot with a 4 foot lead from the shoulder then shooting from the hips would be the same 4 foot lead!! Make sense?

Now shooting from the hips is all about being consistant in in your swing floating the bird. Floating the bird means shooting a particular amount below the bird, so the bird is riding above the shotgun barrel. Thats floating the bird.

Lets say from the hips the barrel is 18" below the bird to equal the flight path of the bird. Then you'll simply have to shoot a lead of 48" in front and 18" below that bird to hit it!!

Sounds easy?!? All this mumbo jumbo I just wrote isn't gonna do a bit of good unless you learn how to shoot properly. You will have to learn to keep your eyes on the bird only and see the lead and float with your peripheral vision.

Not that I want you to shoot from the hips but thats how!! Good Luck!!

EDIT: Shooting with the gun above your head is shot the same way. Just shoot a particular amount over the bird!!
