Newb needs advice

Just bought a Remi 870 Express. My question is what should a complete detailing/cleaning kit be compose of and any recommendations? I tried searching calguns but nothing came up (I know I could probably Google it but I love this forum for the vast experience of most of it's members).
Thanks in advance.

P.S. are there any ranges that would let me shoot birdshot in SoCal?

I image most ranges would let you shoot your shotgun, but maybe not steel shot. I know you can shoot them at Ironsights in Oceanside.

A cleaning kit for a shotgun would consist of a brass brush for the gauge you have, because they are sized for each gauge, a rod to put it on, and some sort of mop. The best and easiest mop to use is the long (around 3 1/2 to 4 feet) bushy kind made for your gauge. They clean very well and when they get dirty you can clean them. You will want some kind of powder solvent like Hoppes #9, and a light gun oil to keep it oiled when you are done.

You can buy a basic kit in most shops, ranges, sporting goods stores. They come with jointed rods. The "best" rods are one piece. The issue is the joints can harm the bore, but most of us have been using jointed rods for many years. You may also want a muzzle protector so the rod doesn't hit the sides of the muzzle when you put it in.

For my 870 it's a bore snake, MPro-7, toothbrush, old tshirts cut down to size and give it a light coat of oil when I'm done.

I know most indoor ranges do not allow birdshot. If they do allow shotgun's mostly it's going to be slugs. Burro Canyon up in Azusa allows birdshot, buck shot and slug ammo for shotgunners.

Oil it up real good when you store it!

I forgot to oil it after range time and it rusted, like no tomorrow, a week later. Imma have to put new paint job on it to prevent future rusts. I believe if you search 870 Express rusting, it'll come up.

I also use cut up t-shirts but I buy them pre cut in a bag from my local hardware stores paint section.

A *light* coat of oil should be plenty for keeping the rust down during extended storage. You don't need a lot.

As far as shooting.......your in luck to live a short drive from Triple B shooting range.

There may be...I don't know it. There's no rust on my firearms.

I have heard of a cure for light rust on a knife blade. Use a pencil and get carbon on the rust (basically "coloring" the rust area) and then use the eraser to get it off.

OO steel wool and Rem Oil works wonders! My 870 Express has had rust problems from the start and it works wonders for me. Oil up the rusty area and buff it with the steel wool in a circular motion, wipe, and repeat as needed. Depending on how bad the rust is, the finish might show a little "staining" but it sure beats a rusty gun. I wipe mine down with a bit of oil after use and store in a silicone treated gun sock and rust much of a problem now. Just to clarify...we are talking about the 870 Express with the crappy crinkle type finish, right?

thanks, will try it out and yes, its the finish you speak of, not the 870 police. Cant believe i quick the rust spot appeared --literally overnight. bleh!

Yeah, they'll do that! I beat the snot out of my 870 and it always comes back asking for more. Great gun, but I could do without the rust.

I have put together a kit for time efficient cleaning of my new Mossberg 930 autoloader with the help of one of the workers at my local gun shop who does gun cleaning as a side business...Hoppe's Boresnake, CLP, Otis receiver brush kit, Hoppe's polymer picks, Hoppe's silicon cloth, and a microfiber towel. This kit made it very easy to clean the preservative out of my gun and give it a good light lube...it was also very easy to clean my barrel with the boresnake at the range right after I was done shooting for the day. I may add more to the kit in the future but for now this set of cleaning supplies is doing everything I need it to do.
