Picking up a mossberg 930SPX

I've been researching the best shotgun for home protection/SHTF and have decided the 930 SPX is the ideal gun for me..... The original model had issues a few years ago but want to make sure I know what to watch out for. I've searched the forums and here is what I've come up with so far.

1. Make sure front sight not canted
2. Forearm tight
3. Heavy barrel
4. finish?

What else am I missing? What should I fix/upgrade right away? Can't wait to add a shotgun to the collection.

930SPX Is good to go. There isn't a big aftermarket for them so you won't hear too much about them.

Some people recommend the Aimpro Tri-rail forend, as it reportedly helps with cycling light loads due to better gas ventilation, or something. That might be worth looking into. best value semi out there. I own a gen3 (from what I can tell) and its been reliable since day one. Most of the problems are from the first gen, so stay away from those if you can. Mossberg CS for the most part will fix anything that is broken, although you may have to wait if you have to get the SG serviced.

Ergonomics is okay, my chief complaint is the LOP is a bit long w/ monte carlo stock, and you can't really shorten it without some bubba modifications. I switched it to choate stock w/ pistol grip and that helped a little with LOP but its still too long.

Forearm wobble isn't a big deal, you just have to tighten the magazine tube. Trigger assembly wobble is designed that way. When you cock the shotgun, it locks up tight.

Finish: I'm not sure what the complaint was on those. It has some kind of matte finish, that isn't that durable, and scratches easily, but to me it doesnt bother me at all.

Heavy barrel: not a big deal. My gen 3 has a heavy barrel, but honestly, it makes no difference than the previous generations.

Cant: old issue. Check for it at prepurchase, but the gen 3 should be good to go.

There isn't alot of aftermarket companies making parts out there, but luckily, the ones that do make parts make quality parts and pretty much make anything you want (except stocks).

I love my 930 spx, it isnt a benelli, but it is one of the few guns that I felt that I got my money's worth right out of the box. I cant say that about alot of my guns. If I had to do it all over, I'd by the regular 930 w/ 2 barrel combo. I have found that the LPA sights on a shotgun is a bit gimmicky at best.

Love my SPX. Wish I could put a solo pistol grip on it, but theres a rod inside the buttstock that helps reduce recoil. And it definitely works! Zero problems with mine.

great tip on mossbergowners.com checked out the forum and the have a sticky on the history of problems with the 930 SPX. great tip, found everything I want to watch out for there.

Also checked out Salient Arms for their 3 gun version but wasn't able to stir up any info, would love to have it 3 gun ready. That is something I've been wanting to try.

be very careful with the sights, I had issues with them alot! they seem to break off after 50 or so rounds if you dont keep tightening them! so I would say invest in a nice red dot (I got myself a Sparx for $200) and have it handy incase your sighst break because it will take mossberg about a month to replace. and they did it for me twice, its just a hassle. I dont know why the dint put in some kind of locking mechanism in there that actually works! Also make sure your tube spring is the longer one because you will get alot of feeding issues with the short spring. oh and one more thing, make sure that you have the newer gas system instead of the old one!

Other then those minor issues the gun is very solid and im happy with it! I dont think I would sell it anytime soon unless a kel-tec comes available! :P
