Aippi's business will implode. He has already alienated many people on this board by his arrogant rude manner. Now, he has proven himself to nothing other that an (ineffective) Remington shill. His own website is proof. You don't go to the trouble to post an entire section to a problem that doesn't exist.

The problem is with all Remington barrels. Google "870 problem". Google "870 extraction". It is not limited to 18.5" barrels. It is the most common post on 870s.

My local gunsmith has fixed over 1000 870s for this exact problem. He is a real gunsmith unlike some of the shills on this board. Assembling 870s does not make a person a gunsmith. Aside from parkerizing, Aippi offers nothing that anyone on this board can't do for himself. Pardon me if I am not impressed with a self proclaimed expert's paid bias against the truth.

Buy an 870 and you have a very high probability of extraction problems without a trip to Home Depot for wooden dowels and steel wool. Even that will not always solve the problem with poor workmanship on the chambers.

I bought a new 870 Express around a month ago and finally shoot it on Christmas.
Before I shoot is I cleaned it good and oiled the trailing arms good and other parts that need oil. I pumped it around 100 times to get it worked in. I bought 10 boxes of Remington Gun Club shells. Shot all 10 boxes over 2 days and the gun shoot perfectly.
Every shell ejected and loaded fine. Not one hiccup. What a blast everyone had shooting it from targets to shooting at clay discs. Just my two cents....

Not happy with the Remington 870 Express

Made it out to the range today to shoot the brand new Remington 870 Express I bought my dad for Christmas. First shot he hit the clay, but couldn't eject the shell. After taking the barrel off the receiver and using a leatherman to remove the shell from the chamber we reassembled the firearm for shot two. Shot two, hits the clay again.......can't eject the shell again. This time I slam the gun down onto the railing to get it to eject the shell.

This happened 100% of the time for about 10 shells. At that point we packed it up and decided something isn't right.

Prior to taking the gun out my father cleaned the action, lubed it, and cycled it roughly 50 times. Obviously the chamber must not be "right."

Rather than polishing the chamber myself and potentially voiding any warranty; I am going to take the gun back to the store where I got it tomorrow.

The only reason I share my story is because the more I talk to people and read on the web, the more I find how common this is amongst modern 870s.

I would not recommend this production 870 to anyone. My Winchester 1300, manufactured in the late 90's has never jammed and cycles much smoother. I have well over 3000 shells through my 1300, both at the range and in the field, without the slightest hiccup. Overall the 870 feels like crap and I regret purchasing it. Goes back to "You get what you pay for," i guess.

Sorry to steal the spotlight from the OP, but I did use Remington 12 GA slugs in my 870 and I clean it regularly with the proper cleaning kit and RemOil. Yet, shortstroking happens quite often (probably every 8 shells) and it did jam on one occasion, which I followed through with advice and bumped the stock on the bench.

I realize that shortstroking my be partially my fault, but how do I minimize the chances for it doing so as well as jamming? It isn't semi-auto after all.

Self proclaimed Expert? Jake, the Factory Certifications are not Self Proclaimed. I repair these weapons for Law Enforcment Department and my builds are being carried by LEO
's in 29 states. I go to Ilion NY to the Remington factory every three to recertify. Why would you make such a statement? I am an expert on this weapon and trained by the experts that manufacture it.

Your gun smith? Gun smiths may not know about every model out there. An Amorer is not a gun smith. He is Certified and an expert on that model only. Like I am on the 870,11-87,700 and 7615. I know little to nothing about most other models other then the ones I was issued by my department.

He is why what "Your Gun Smith" may have said does not impress me. I just had a client buy one of my 20ga Tacticals. He calls all upset stating that I sold him a defective weapon and what was I going to do about it. I asked him what was wrong and it turns out he had not even shot it. The ffl that received it looked it over and told him the ejector spring was missing. I explained to the client that the 20 ga does not have an ejector spring and he told me this ffl was a vetern gun smith and he had no 20ga 870's in the shop but showed him on a 12 ga 870 where the ejector spring was susposed to be and his did not have one. I again explained that the 20ga 870 does not have an ejector spring but the guy went on about how he has done business with this gun smith for years and he was not wrong. I said fine, send the weapon back and I will give you a full refund but do yourself a favor and call remington first and ask them.

I have still not heard from this guy and I bet he is to embarassed to call after he showed his butt based on what his "Gun Smith" told him. This gun smith should have check his facts before starting some mess like this and upseting the guy. But hey, he is a gun smith and knows it all. Right?

Those Winchester shells from Walmart are absolute garbage. I was shooting those in my M2 once and the hulls were separating from the bases. They smell like absolute **** too. I will never use those again.

Since my original post here and with the suggestions of several people on this form, and completing the “Polishing” of the 870, I have not had one ejection issue after many return trips to the firing range.
Now I am no longer using the Winchester shells, but I most likely will buy a box of the Super-X type again (not the Wal-Mart shells) and blast them off just too see what happens.
In my option for HD use, you use what is the most reliable ammunition.

My Recent Experiences with 870

Instead of starting a new thread about my own issue I thought I'd chime in here.

Issue: Shells will not eject from 870 express. Must work the pump rather forcibly, and repeatedly, to get them out.

Background:

-First gun owned

-Purchased 870 from Big 5 in June

-Disassembled and reassembled out of curiosity/to get to know gun better

-Did not clean gun, or the residue they apparently put on the action, prior to first use (I had good intentions, but a desert trip came up and I was lazy and didn't appreciate the reasons why it is good to clean a new gun prior to use)

-Maybe 1 or 2 shells per 25 were jamming

-All were Winchester Universal

-None of the slugs or 00 I put through the gun jammed

-Have put maybe 200 rounds through the gun, in total

-2 shots in to shooting clays this past Saturday, the gun would not eject the shell; this time, it was a Remington (not sure which model, a friend provided the ammo and I forgot to look).

-No more jams that day with Remington ammo (only 50 shots total)

So it seems I made the situation worse by not cleaning prior to first use. And from now on I will not use Winchester; especially not Winchester Universal. It also seems this will improve as the gun is "worked in".

I wish I would have read all this before I took it out shooting for the first time. Would have saved me some headaches and stress. Thanks to all who shared the informative feedback.

My new-to-me 870 stuck a shell Saturday. First time out and just shot a few 3" 000's to get a feel. Had to rack the slide multiple times to get the shell out. It didn't get enough purchase on the shell's rim to extract it. I was kinda surprised the extractor just ran right over the case head with little effort. Cycles unfired shells fine.

Probably a few things going on. Chamber might not be highly polished, shells could have too much friction once fired due to plastic texture, etc. The "cheap" shells use a steel head which won't "relax" as well after expansion during firing. The thinner the steel (cheap), the worse the sticking. Not an uncommon problem in some tube guns or gauge adapters. Slick hulls w/ brass headed cases is the typical solution. Just how sharp the case head to body transition (slight radius in the corner?), could enter in too.

I'll address this from multiple angles.

I bought my 870 Express(28 inch barrel) back in December. Did a thorough cleaning before I shot it. Cleaned the barrel with Hopps and then used Remington oil. Also, oiled the trailing arms and inside receiver. Only shot Remington Gun Club shells. Never had a problem with shells jamming or ejecting. Shoot another 100 rounds yesterday shooting trap. Every shell shot/ejected perfectly. I always clean the gun and lube it after every outing. Did lots of research on Bass pro, Cabelas and other sites, and the Remington Gun club shells had good feedback from other owners of Remington 870s. Bought a bunch of boxes when on sale for $5.49 from Bass Pro. Still same price right now.

My story.
I bought my first shotgun around 10 years ago. An 18.5" HD model 870 from Big5. Didn't clean it. Over the past 10 years I have no idea how many rounds I put through it. Never cleaned it once. Until yesterday. I had some spare time and gave it a once over. Cleaned up fine. Over the years I never had a problem with it. I didn't even know they existed.

A little while back I met up with a buddy with an 870. I went shooting with him and it wouldn't eject about 1 in 10. I was shocked and figured he just got a lemon.

And then I started seeing all these threads yesterday when doing a search on how to change my j safety button.

I'm flabbergasted to say the least. How hard can it be to make a reliable pump?
IMO somebody shoud be fired.

I would love to add a few pump shotguns to my arsenal, but now I'm afraid to go with Remington.
