    copied from the CalDOJ website:

"ARTICLE 2. UNLAWFUL CARRYING AND POSSESSION OF WEAPONS
    12020(c)
    (21) As used in this section, a "shotgun" means a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of projectiles (ball shot) or a single projectile for each pull of the trigger."

If there is no shoulder stock on the firearm, it is not intended to be fired from the shoulder.

Consulting the California Firearms Laws 2007 booklet, under the section PROHIBITED FIREARMS, AMMUNITION, AND RELATED DEVICES, DOJ states that "It is unlawful for any person to own, posess, lend, manufacture, import, sell, or offer to sell any short-barreled shotgun..." This is defined as:

"A short-barreled shotgun means a firearm designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell that has a barrel or barrels of less than 18 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches; any weapon made from a shotgun which meets the barrel length or overall length criteria; any device which may be restored to fire a fixed shotgun shell and which meets the barrel length or overall length criteria; or any part or combination of parts designed and intended to convert a device into a short-barreled shotgun or which would permit an individual to readily assemble a short-barreled shotgun. (Penal Code 12020(c)(1).)

...which is exactly why we can't buy those Taurus "The Judge" revolvers, the Thunder Five, or any .410 derringers in California.

To me this also makes it quite clear that, as far as California state laws are concerned, if a weapon is made to fire shotgun shells, it will either be classified as a shotgun (with appropriate barrel and overall lengths) or a short-barreled shotgun (see above). There is no third gray-area classification for guns that "...aren't fired from the shoulder...." contrary to what some folks on Calguns might believe.

Indeed, how so? IIRC the Auto & Burglar has ~12" barrels.

I know it's on the C&R list. But I didn't think CA law made any exemptions for SBS, SBR, AOW, FA, or AW because of C&R status.

Which begs the question: is such a non-shotgun a "concealable" gun?

I've never heard the term uttered from the lips of anyone that has years of experience with shotguns. I believe that this slang term, like so many others in various disiplines, is typically used by those that are only slightly knowledgable on the subject and trying too hard to impress others with their (limited) knowledge. Of course, as with any generalization, there are exceptions. Kimbercarry would be one.
