Best first shotgun for "general use"?

Remi 870 12Gauge, my first shotgun, great all around gun.

the rem 870 or the moss 500 would be good choices. both are decently priced, solid, and have large aftermarket following should you choose to customize or replace/repair parts.

I really like my Weatherby PA-459 HD shotgun... Cheaper than an 870 and just as fun to shoot.

At present I have two semi auto pistols, but I may like to get a shotgun for "general use", which may include IDPA type shotgun stages, clay target shooting, desert recreation, and maybe bird or mammal hunting.

If you can find one the Winchester 1300s are nice shotguns

I went to the store today (to buy an XD9 tac) but also looked at shotguns (and rifles, etc.) I specifically handled an 870 and a 500, and to be honest, the 500 had a better feeling (and sounding) pump action. I also like that the 500 may be easier to feed without getting my thumb caught. I'm still undecided, but it was nice to handle the guns.

I would say either mossberg 500 or Remington 870 depending how you like your safety mounted. Mossberg maverick another option. The Remingtons will cost a hair more. The end.
