Local Range does not allow pistol grip shotguns?

Sounds like they are not being clear about pistol grip only shotguns (like a Mossberg Cruiser) vs. shotguns that have a pistol grip and a normal stock, but it seems like you figured it out.

When in doubt, ask them specifically what they mean in their rules... remember most range rules are written by lawyers to be sort of generalized on purpose...



They just turn what was once a pistol grip into something resembling a standard rifle stock where you can't wrap your thumb around (which is arguably the defining characteristic of a "pistol grip")... similar products are how you run an AR or AK-type rifle as "featureless" in CA to allow other configurations that might otherwise be illegal.

However, it still seems to be a grey area becuase the DOJ has not approved it. Meh, I will overlook the leagailties of it for now... : ))

Am I the only one confused about why anyone would still be confused when all they have to do is call the range and ask them to clarify? Pick up the phone, call, and if they answer you would be able to find out within 60 seconds.

Well if you look at it this way, others who will want to know this exact same thing will search and find this later, saving the shooting range many calls regarding this exact topic.

Me: Well it mentions no pistol grip shot.. (I got interrupted)
Them: Yeah, if your shotgun has a pistol grip and stock it's fine but if it's a pistol grip only with no stock then it's not allowed
Me: Oh, ok. So like a benelli m4 is cool, but why not something like those mossberg models that only have a grip and no butt stock?
Them: Yeah, as long as it still has the stock it's fine
Me: Yeah, but what's the problem with shotguns that don't have the stock and only the grip?
Them: Well we used to have people that kept shooting from the hip without aiming, so no more

The mystery is solved. They had idiots shooting unaimed from the hip and decided the easiest way to put a stop to it was to just ban pistol grip only shotguns with no stock. The end. My total time spent on the call was maybe 90 seconds.

i know the gun room is starting to get wary of shotguns.

they always tell us to aim center mass because people have been shooting up their target holders.

i just use slugs anyway when i take my mossberg 590 w/pg stock

I've been itching to go shooting, but the nearest indoor range (Insight Shooting Range) doesn't allow pistol grip shotguns for some reason.

Does anyone know why? Does it pose a safety risk somehow?

I thought pistol grips increase control over the weapon?

Any possible legal issues?

For clarity, is this "Pistol Grip Only" (PGO) or a "Pistol Grip Buttstock" (PGB) equipped shotgun?

If it's PGO, makes some degree of sense they don't want that on their range, even if I don't necessarily agree. If it's just a pistol grip equipped buttstock, then they need to take a few deep breaths and re-read the range rules - ask for someone in a management position to explain it.

In the end, at a private range, it's their rules. If they have a rule and it is very specific and they are unwavering in it's application, you are out of luck. Find another range. If it's hypersensitivity to what a particular range safety officer deem the range rules to mean but as written could be more broadly interpreted that's another matter and one you should take up with a higher power within the organization.
