    Old School Backpack Zombie Slayer

We got a really ratty looking, no finish at all, never cleaned, full of mud, really sad Winchester Model 12 from 1929 in the shop the other day. Didn't pay much for it and I doubt it's worth much as it was. I decided to go ahead and clean it up to see if I could get anything out of it and still sleep at night. Several hours to completely disassemble, clean and apply a couple of coats of cold blue. I was amazed at how well it cleaned up and even took the cold blue pretty well. So then the wheels started turning. I noticed the gun would fit in my Go Bag perfectly when broken down if I cut the barrel down to 20". Since this gun is from the good old days it is built incredibly strong and with no concern for current games rules so it has a (6) round tube
    Before mods:

I took the leap and did a hacksaw/file job on the barrel this afternoon. I think it turned out great!

I need to get a new bead on it and I think I may even put a nice finish (not sure what yet) on it. I think I may even get crazy and have it cut for chokes and maybe even ported. Wonder if Vang Comp would touch it with a 10' pole?

Shot it anyway and it was a freaking blast. Put (50) birdshot, (5) slugs and (5) buckshot though it with no problem at all. I really like this gun!

I forgot the best part, it's a slam fire gun!

I just picked one up too. Similar configuration, but mine was chopped before I got it. fortunately, they left me enough length for me to clean up the crappy pipecutter job they did.

I'm trying to think of something more interesting than a simple bead that suits it. Any thoughts?

The only reason I might want mine set up for choke tubes would be to put a rifled choke tube in it.

      These things are awesome!

Yeah, cool huh? Never thought an old bird gun would have a use for me. Never thought I'd take a hacksaw to shotgun.
I'm thinking maybe a ghost ring setup, but I may just do a Trijicon front bead to keep it simple.

Chokes, for my purposes I would like a tight enough pattern to be able to put enough buckshot on a target to do the job out to 25 yards.

That explains why you're so surprised. It isn't an old bird gun. It's an old trench gun!

I keep looking at the thing and thinking I want to do something that looks like an old banded ramp rifle sight, only proportioned to the fatter barrel and appropriately low for the purpose.

Sweet! Keep it simple. Bead sight and park it. No need for Vang Comp either, just use flight control buckshot. Pretty awesome that it slamfires too!

A cruffler somewhere is crying, but whatever works for you. I'd rather see a gun get used than put on a shelf. Coming from an 03 holder like myself I won't buy it if I can't shoot it. Looks like a fun project and since the price was right why not. I like G-force's suggestion. Nothing says business like a park finish.

It was not getting used, no way in the condition it was in. I have a really nice Benelli bird gun, what the heck do I need an old pump bird gun for? So no guilt on my end for chopping it and make a cool SHTF gun out of it.

I'm leaning towards parkerizing it and a Trijicon front bead only . . . .

Front bead is all you need. I need to open a gun store so I can get cool stuff that just falls in my lap.

I don't feel so guilty about cutting down my old High Standard semi-auto anymore.

I've had a hard time finding a front sight that will work - I'm just about ready to sweat a rifle sight onto it and call it good. If you have a pedestal base, that might work.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.
