identifying fixed choke on a Berretta Silver Snipe

Anyone have a clue to what markings I should look for? I don't see any of the common/typical markings such as M, I/C etc.

This is an older model believed to be between 1960-70's. The only thing I see that separates the barrel markings are as follows:

Top tube marks: 1,415 18,3 17,4
Bottom tube marks: 20,3 18,4 17,3

The other thing I notice is the top chamber has one star while the 2nd chamber has 2 stars.

Now why would there be full on top and mod on the bottom? Shouldn't it be the other way around for skeet? I was told this was used for skeet shooting.

If that shotgun has full on top and mod on the bottom it is made for the field, not skeet. It might be a decent trap gun though.

Most shotguns that are field have the bottom mod because the bottom barrel is usually shot first as it is made for closer shots and the bottom barrel produces 'straight back recoil' as it obviously is on the bottom portion of the gun. This allows for better second shots as the recoil is slightly less than shooting the top barrel first.

The top barrel is normally used as the second shot, as if the first, or closer shot is missed, the target is now further away and now requires a full choke.
The top barrel also produces a different recoil that requires more time for acquisition of the second or following shot.

Took it out last night. Not bad. First run was horrible I hit four clays w/ Remington load. 2nd run w/ federal [wallmart] hit 13, 3rd run w/ winchester super X hit 14 (pounded my shoulder with this load), last run winchester white box hit 11.

Obviously got tired in the end but YES It definitely kicks. That super X @ 2960fps really worked my shoulder and cheek bone. Others were rated at 2900fps.

A unique smell of powder which was most appealing came out of the federal. Like a scent of a woman. Amazing!

However yes it works for trap fine can't complain it does what it needs to do.

Please double check those numbers!!! If those loads pushes that velocity your gun would most likely explode!!

A gun with a Mod/Full choke will work fine in trap, but in skeet you're limiting yourself lotzzzz!!! It is a field gun. It is still a good gun.

You options are to install choke tubes or just open the chokes up to skeet/skeet. Do that if you're gonna shoot skeet only though ...

I tossed the boxes yesterday All I know is that the 3 of 4 boxes had the same FPS markings on the box. The 3rd round of shooting ended up shooting noticeably harder. Same shell size, pellet size etc. Maybe it was 1200fps/1290fps.

I probably wouldn't take it far enough to install any chokes for a discontinued beretta after factoring replacement parts should it ever fail. I will however get a recoil pad to put on it for now. Maybe an adjustable but plate to lift up that stock a bit without pushing the cheek bone to aggressively.

haha ... those fps are more inline with Wally World 12ga.

Couldn't you just measure the ID of the barrel at the tip?

There are charts showing the differences in diameter from cylinder all the way through to special extra full hunting chokes.

How was his work? His prices are incredible....something like 35.00 without shipping for shotgunworld members. IIRC it was about 15.00 for shipping. Im also thinking of using him for screw in choke tubes. He comes highly recommended by shotgunworld.com members.

His work is Great, it looks like a factory job on my model 11. He only threads for truchokes (.795 44 TPI). I paid 70 bucks for threading, a flush choke and shipping and it took 14 days (it was on the truck both ways for 11 of those days.)

Thats a great price, the choke ran 20-25 dollars and shipping probably around 15.00. His labor was 30-35 for threading. Ive read that sometimes he can have it back to you within 3 days.
