    12 Gauge recoil..

Newb to shotguns here. I know some of you might think 12 Gauge is nothing, but after 15 00 Buck my right shoulder was hurting. Was shooting 9 pellet Federal 00 Buck out of a Benelli M4. From what I understand the recoil was even reduced because the M4 is gas operated. Maybe I was shooting incorrectly? I had the stock tightly snug against my shoulder.

Lean into it. I guarantee this will help.

You almost certainly didn't get the buttpad into the "pocket" of your shoulder and hold it tight so it doesn't buck you if your shoulder was smarting on a gas gun after only 15 shells. You can check the NSSF for vids on proper shooting stance to help with recoil management. Seeing the vids generally is a lot easier to understand than explaining it.

Lift that elbow 90 degrees. Also, "pull" the shotgun apart; forearm forward and buttstock rearward into that shoulder pocket. Take the recoil at the hips.

tight to your shoulder. If you have it loose on your shoulder, or hold it slightly off, your shoulder will get slapped hard with 00

A recoil pad helps, or so I am told.

There are some really good aftermarket recoil pads that make a WORLD of difference in not only felt recoil, but control.

I haven't bought one in years but I hear the latest greatly popular one is called "limbsaver"

I will probably end up getting one for the Mossberg 590-A1 I just bought as I hear the stock pad is only average.

Unfortunatly their site is confusing and I will have to have the gun out of ten day jail before I can determine which one I will need to use.

I have a speedfeed stock which makes the choice all the more problematic.

But I digress. Get a good recoil pad and wear good ear protection and after a while you will get used to the punishment.

Is it possible that you had the shotgun buttstock in your collarbone/clavicle area? Sometimes when shooters try to use the "shoulder pocket" they end up using the clavicle right next to their shoulder joint instead.

Also, leaning into the recoil that rojocorsa mentioned already is a great technique. That can make a huge difference.

There are multiple flavors of the shell you shot. What specific one was it? A quick web search showed 1140fps, 1145fps, and 1325fps versions.

BTW, I picked up some 1550fps #2 (3" shells) to have some fun. JFC! That about tore me up.

Fit is one of the most important things in shotgunning. If the gun fits you poorly, you will feel more recoil. That being said, you may need to add some things to your gun to make it fit better. Adjusting the length of pull (distance from your elbow to the tip of your fingers) is one of the easiest things to do for better fit. Try adding a recoil pad for this. I'm sure Benelli has some pricey extended pads for purchase. You can also add a cheek pad/rest for better fit. Like a lot of people have said, lean into it with ~60% of your weight on the front foot and 40% to the rear. See if that works...

If you're new to shotguns, there are a bunch of factors at play that can cause increased perceived recoil. The shotgun is likely to not fit you perfectly, your technique could probably be improved, and your shoulder not being used to recoil heavier than .223.

See if you can find someone more experienced with shotguns and ask them for pointers on your technique. Also, go shoot 25-50 rounds once a week or once every two weeks and by the 4th time you'll have gotten so used to it, it won't bother you to even shoot a couple hundred rounds in one go.

                          Thanks for the advice guys.

I remembered I shot slugs and 00 Buck.

If your going to be shooting a bunch of buck, try the low recoil stuff (if it will cycle your gun) it makes a noticable diffence.
