Rusty wants you to "break it in." Saiga-12's sometimes tend to cycle unreliably until you "polish" the action a little. i.e. put high-power rounds through it so it will cycle at full speed and 200 rounds so the cycling will actually wear off any roughness. After this break in, you'll probably find it will cycle lighter ammo that it wouldn't when new.
9mm and 45acp are equally lousy. There's not a dime's worth of difference in REAL terminal ballistics. Get over it.

see if it will cycle the low brass rounds too. be very careful of the gas settings though. gas setting 1 for hot rounds, gas setting 2 for the lower power rounds.

if it doesnt effectively cycle low power rounds, try revolving the gas plug complete revolutions.

also, convert the thing!! if you're in california, than youl need a bullet button either way. might as well go all out.

First work the action to see if you feel any rough spots.

Next take out the gas piston to check your gas ports in the barrel and ensure there are no machining screw-ups in there.

After that disassemble the magazine and smooth the mag tube and follower until they slide freely with no bind points.

Finally lube it up and shoot it.

After making sure the action was smooth, my Saiga was shooting low brass trap loads reliably after about a box of shells.

I wouldn't convert until you know everything is working right stock.

if you plan on shooting clays leave the stock alone

i find the pistol grip slows me down

First thing, like wash said, check gas ports and action for rough spots. If you plan to convert the second is not needed since the guts will be different anyway. As far as "break in" is concerned, it's not really needed if the person doing the conversion knows what they are doing. A good smith can get your action slicked up in no time. The key is removing the friction, that way the gas has an easier time pushing that bolt carrier around. All of my conversions get the slick job now, they run smoother then my personal S 12.

                    Thanks all,

I broke it down lastnight and found the inside had a lot of metal shavings from what looked to be from the sporting configuration changes and the CA compliance requirements.

I cleaned all of it out, ran through the action about 100 times (fairly smooth) and the mag does not bind at all.

I will check the gas ports tonight and pick up some target loads to play with.

So, I get conflicting answers reguarding my intended set up no matter who I ask...lets discuss.

Here is what id like to do:
change the optics (prefer red dot site)

pistol grip option (keep same trigger or convert)

                    10 round mag

Change the stock- Girlfriend wants to use it also so a shorter stock for her and a longer one for me is a plus. The big question is rather than change the stock...can you legaly modify a adjustable stock with set screws to retain compliance?

or just go with one of the "pup" kits and be done?

Convert it, it'll clean up the trigger, overall length will decrease by a few inches, and it will handle and balance better.
