    Winchester 1911 Help

So my father has a Winchester 1911 that he picked up 10-15 years ago from an old man who was letting it rust away in a shed.

He has had it looked over by a gunsmith and they said that all of the individual parts are ok but the gun does not cycle properly. I do not know if the smith couldn't figure out how to remedy this or if my dad just didn't have it fixed.

Neither of us have any desire to really use the gun but it would be nice to get it in working order (we have many others that are safer). Does anyone have experience working on one of these or know of a gunsmith who would be able to help us out?

I know this gun is not worth much and is a poor design (aka the Widow Maker) but it's a nice conversation piece. From my research the parts are a bit hard to find, Numrich has some listed under Model 11.

Am I better off just picking up a donor and cannibalizing it or can a gunsmith get this back in working order for a reasonable price? It's also missing the front stock.

I am sure that to restore this gun will cost more than it's worth but my dad says he would like to do it so I want to see if I can get it done for him.

    Any help is appreciated.

Parts for a Winchester 1911 could be difficult to come by. It was only manufactured for 14 years. Only about 83K units produced.

I'd be concerned that parts you find listed as "Model 11" would be for a Remington Model 11. Most places I've looked tend to make a clear distinction between Winchester 1911 and Remington 11.

Might be an interesting project for an afficiando or a collector to restore.

      Thanks for the input.

I am pretty sure that the Winchester Model 11 is the same as the Model 1911 but I could be wrong. The exploded view of the Model 11 on Numrich sure looked like the 1911 and definitely not a Remington.

I know that very few were made and Winchester actually would give you a new Model 12 for turning in a Model 1911 since it was poorly designed. So there are less in circulation. I don't know that this one will ever be a collector but it would be nice to get it looking decent and functioning.

I just looked this up. Jack First gun shop has spare parts. Also Okiegunsmith.com has some info. Maybe they could work on it? It shouldn't be that much different than a Browning A5, Remington 11, or Savage 720. I thought about buying one of those once to go with my other A5 clones. As long as the gun is handled safely and correctly, there shouldn't be any safety issues. Hope you could get it running.

I think the Winchester 1911 is a totally different animal!
