My conversations with Hans tends to lead me to believe that the reason why tactical buckshot doesn't improve because of it's reduced power charge and possibliy the shot cup expanding (leaking) then being constricted back to cylinder bore again towards the end of the barrel.
My personal experience showed a marginal increase in spread of the LE132 buckshot. Understand I'm speaking of minimal degregation of pattern, but it couldn't/didn't make it tighter. However, full power 12 pellet buckshot from S&B was improved greatly. If I remember correctly about 50% improvement and allowed the gun with that ammo to have a 25 yard "B" zone where it had been a 15 yard load with all my other 18 and 20 inch non-vang'd guns.
My guns didn't (except the Vang because of it's short buttstock) didn't fit my wife either. she got a 590 for her birthday and we measured the guns LOP v. her frame requirements. Resulting in a 1 1/2" being taken off in a miter box. I had to drill the mounting holes a little for the recoil pad (yes you'll have to re-shape the contour) attachment , but she's been running it well, pain free since January.
It's an easy fix, didn't cost me anything but some time and made a world of difference in her being able to fire extended strings of fiire without pain (shoulder or face).
When I figure out how to post some pics here I'll show the "rule of thumb" for LOP measurements.

      Vang Comp pattern is tight!

I remember once seeing my friend using his Vang Comped 870 Police at an action shooting match. He forgot to switch to slugs for the two 65yd steel silhouettes, and sent two 00 buck loads downrange. Both steel targets went down with a clang. He was using the cheapest 00 buck brand, Rio.

Adding a Limb Saver recoil pad to any long gun will tame the recoil quite a lot.

I think he was hinting that ERDept used the word shotty, and thus, that makes him look like someone who only plays video games and has airsoft guns. Not my opinion, just saying what the shotty people always hint.

haha, a slang name for a shotgun to me. Have really not played too many video games.

I guess the video people game people are adopting this, so people who think that must be video game players.

Anyway, porting does not too much (makes you/me happy you got it though (all in the mind)).

The recoil pad has greatest effect. So that coupled with a semi-auto will feel softest shooting, and I suppose technique, according to my clays instructor at Triple B's. His name is Ray. Call and ask for him by the way for a great clays coach.

From what was discussed in a recent class I was in, skip the porting (unless you are enamored with the look of fire shooting out of your barrel or something -- it does look cool... ), consider the back-boring if you want, since that can have an effect on the pattern. For patterning concerns though, it's easier and likely more effective to choose the ammo that patterns best from your shotgun... and last I recall (unless I'm confused) the LE132 load is the "Flite-Control" wad, no? That wad system already makes the #00 buck pattern as if it were a slug, more or less, out to like 25 yards? Shooting LE132 from a VC barrel setup is almost like belt and suspenders, imho...

That said, the other advice is probably most sound... get a properly fit LoP for your wife (shorter "youth sizes" will probably be better), a decent recoil pad, and work on technique. Consider an external shooting pad as well (or the ol' maxi-pad taped to the shoulder trick... )

20ga seems like a great balance between comfort and effectiveness if you are training mostly for home defense since the ballistics are very similiar out to typical HD distances. Semi-auto actions help absorb some recoil (due to the mass of the bolt moving), but arguably complicates (or at least significantly changes) the manual of arms for the weapon system, so be aware of that.

From my own research, I would opt to skip all the fancy "recoil reducing" stocks since they do make the entire system behave a bit differently, and some users experience things like increased-cheekslap which may not be pleasant.

Reduced-recoil buck can help a bit too... just be wary of reduced-recoil slugs since they can be notoriously inconsistent. 1oz slugs are going to punish you regardless (even moreso if you use bad technique). If the recoil is really a huge problem, going down to 20ga might be the answer...

Or mayhaps teach her to use a carbine instead...
