Maverick 88

Im buying a Maverick 88 from Turners today. They have em on sale for $209. I know some of the parts are made in Mexico but are assembled in the USA. I think if the entire weapon was made and assembled outside of USA I would not have bought it.

What do you guys think? I have heard alot of good reviews on this shotgun compared to the 500. I guess the only problem is the cocking mechanism cannot be changed with the foregrip but Im OK with that. The only thing I will swap out is the stock for a pistol grip and a heat shield. I like to K.I.S.S. my shotguns Its for home defense.

Maverick 88 is a 500 with just a couple of differences that reduce cost of production and, as a result, reduced cost to the consumer. It's a tried and true design at it's core that should give you years of service.

The main thing that some find an issue with is the one piece fore end and lack of interchangeability with aftermarket parts. If your intent is to keep it simple / as is, then that won't be an issue for you. Heat shield if you must, but if all you plan to do is use it to defend the homestead my opinion is that it's added weight / cost without real benefit. YMMV on that.

The Maverick 88 is an even more bang-for-the-buck version of the Mossberg 500. If you plan to keep it simple without much modificaton, the Maverick 88 is a good price workhorse.

For the Maverick or Mossberg, I personally prefer buttstock instead of pistol grip stock. It is because the location of its safety is perfect for my thumb to operate when pairs with a buttstock, ambidextrously.

And if you plan to keep the configuration simple, you might minus the heatshield unless you have specific purpose for it. Add a simple flashlight mount, and that would be good-to-go for home defense.

Yeah now that you mention it the heat shield would just be eye candy and I do like the idea of a flashlight mount.

I think the safety on the maverick is a button next to the trigger on the guard. Or am I confusing that with the 500? The maverick is a button on the trigger and the 500 is a switch on the butt?

My Mossberg 500 has the safety on top of the receiver, just in front of the stock. It is easily operated with the right thumb when holding the SG correctly.

I have only ever heard good things about them except from people who have never owned or even shot one. Remi fan boys I'm looking at you.

That being said, good purchase. Lets talk about your mods. Pistol grip, I get that. May I suggest a pistol grip with collapsible stock. Shotguns are not what are portrayed in movies. Shooting from the hip is for action stars, not real HD. Now can we talk about the heat shield? Yeah it looks cool and shooty. But unless you plan to find yourself in a firefight that last longer then 5 minutes and you are going to put 100 or so rounds down the tube you don't need one. Trust me, have you ever seen someone who shoots skeet or trap with a heat shield? It is just added weight at the front of your barrel and all it will do is slow down your swing.

Get the pistol grip w/adj stock and stock shell carrier. Get a side saddle shell carrier and VELCRO it to the side. Get a tac light up front and maybe, a ghost ring sight. Done

+1 on the Maverick 88. I've had the 8 shot 'Security' model, only reason I sold it was to upgrade to the Mossberg 590a1, but for the right price I'd love to pick up a Maverick again.

Yeah I was bummed that Turners didnt have the 8 shot model, they didnt even know one existed..lol. I settled for the 5+1 but it is still a bad *** little shotgun. I was comparing it to the 500 series and it was the same except for a few goodies like sights and bayo lugs but other than that its solid.

Got the shotgun a week ago and just now received the heat shield (not heavy at all) and the pachmayr presentation pistol grip. They make the gun look and feel good. The grip is a rubber that feels solid. Man this is a sweet shotgun for the price and it feels really smooth. Ill try to get some pics up soon. But for the price (A+ for Turners) this shotgun is great

Ah you got the ghost ring type sights. Nice! I like that black "matte" finish too.

The thing I miss on my Mav is the bayo lug

^ ^ ^ Yep, comes in handy if you're using slugs, it's almost like having AR-15 sights on that bad boy.

I still want my cheapo Maverick 88 to mod the hell out of it though.

The 590a1 is GTG straight outta the box, but gets a little boring after a while.

The only problem I ever had with a Maverick 88, one which was manufactured before Mossberg I think took them over, was the one sided fore end piece of metal. After time it got really loose, and it started to wobble, I sold to a friend for $100, and got myself a Mossy 500, and never looked back.

Yeah its two sided now. Same as a 500 but the grip cannot be removed. You have to switch over to a true 500 fore end to switch the grip. But at least its got two rod (or whatever they are called) now. It feels a little loose but it feels really smooth also. Not so loose its cheezy just enough for a smooth slide

My next purchase is a chromed out mariner or that new chrome lined barrel Winchester X
