Clay Shooting For First Time - Shotgun Modifications?

I'll be going with a bunch of newbies (including me), so I wanted to make the first time as enjoyable as possible and as easy to hit targets as possible. So I'm thinking of adding some sights that I would be able to use reliably in both home defense and for clay shooting.

I have the Remington 870 Express (see below) without the built in aperture sight and rail of the newer Tactical models.

I don't want to do any welding with a gunsmith because I don't want to make any permanent modifications in case I want to change something for whatever reason. And I'm thinking it'd be cheaper not to do anything permanent.

So this is what I'm thinking of buying for the REAR SIGHTS:

And then for the FRONT SIGHT RAILS, I'd put this on the top barrel:

ALTERNATIVE? Can I just get a reflex sight and then I don't need to worry about a front sight? Such as this one? I can just remove it for home defense since the distances are so short, or just leave it on.

Am I totally off-base? Am I missing anything?

    ><

Your going in the wrong direction....just the bead on the front is all you want.

A good change that will help would be to take off the pistol grip and put a plan o'l field stock on it.

KISS is best for break'n clays...all the Tac stuff just gets in the way. You will see what I mean when you get to the range.

A lot of clay ranges do not allow pistol grips......if they do.....use waht you have now and change the stock if you plan to go back for more.

You may find clays to be very fun!

^^^ Yeap!! The sidesaddle, big tac latch, rails on the reciever & red dot sights will all get in the way when you're looking for multiple targets. It'll definately get in the way in clays shooting...

Save up for a standard stock and a longer barrel (28" would work). It's actually pretty fun to shoot sporting clays with a pump!

OK, cool. I'll try and see how it goes without any additions.

Rowland Heights, eh? We're looking to go to:

We are the one-stop location for the shooting enthusiast in Southern California. This public range has private bays for pistol and rifle, 100-yard bay for rifle and a 30-station sporting clays course. Bring your own guns or rent one from us.

Do you usually go to other places?

I use my remington 870 front sight only and was hitting 8 out of 10 after only my second visit. You don`t need to buy a longer barrel or anything just aim and shoot.

dont put anything on it yet -> it aint the Nike's that give you game its you yourself. Fancying up a shotgun is fun and makes it look tactical & cool. Your friends that never have shot anything will drool all over it when its dressed up BUT as others have stated: for clays, that stuff gets in the way.

I left my pump guns stock, small brass bead is all I need. save your money for more ammo, clays & range time. Do a shotgun clinic. Join me on a Sat shotgun tourney @ A Place to shoot in saugus/santa clarita its only about 5 bucks more than the range fee and you get 2 rounds in 5 stand game

Utilize your Calguns community. Look into BJL's clinics:

Maybe a 26"to 30" barrel no extension and a regular stock. That's the best way for shooting clays. No special sights needed single bead works best. Or get a second gun for trap and skeet...

An extra bbl for the 870 is not too expensive. I shoot trap and skeet and change bbls to match what I am shooting. A bbl with choke tubes is another option. 28" is a good compromise. Never been to a range that let you load more then one shot for reular trap and two for skeet (doubles). So, no magazine extension needed. I use the same 870 (or 1100) for hunting, so three rounds max in any case. No offense, but yours looks more like a closet gun for HD. At a legit range others shooters may back away!

That's exactly what the gun's primary purpose is for. I haven't shot it in over a year, so I figure this'll be a good time as any.

I don't want to buy another gun if possible as I'm not an avid gun enthusiast. . . yet.
