NRA home defense article on Facebook

Ed. Director John Zent offers up some neighborly advice on home-defense shotguns. What do you use for home defense, readers?

An unusual number of responses seem to be pro #7-9 birdshot. A couple recommend using rubber bullets (which seems like an extra stupid idea to me). Am I mistaken?

I've never seen a serious HD recomendation for anything lighter than #4 buckshot.

A 12Ga pump loaded with 3 inch mag's, 00 buckshot. If the sound of a round being pumped into the chamber don't kill them the buckshot will.
At least that guy backs up his lethal sound waves with 00.

Oh, and no, you're not mistaken.

While I'm editing, I'm just going to post some of my favorites.

    .22 ruger / can't go wrong
One has to be careful with any home defense gun. Shotguns, even with small shot loads can penetrate a lot of sheet rock. You never want to hurt the ones you love so it might be best to shoot rubber shot loads first followed with something more potent as a second shot. One fact is that if you have a pump shotgun just racking the pump can be enough to scare off a home intruder!
    ("fact")

A shotgun is the best becasue it has the power to knock someone down and can be pointed and not aimed like a pistol in the dark. Just hit the midsection of anyone and they will not get up.
Mossberg 500 with mounted push-button flashlight. First round is loaded with 12-guage OC pepper shells, subsequent shells are loaded with steel shot; my reasoning being if they don't stop after hearing me rack the first round, and are not incapacitated by the pepper and are still attacking, deadly force will be utilized. It's my homemade three strikes law.
And one last one to lift some spirits.

The constant threat of thermonuclear retaliation seems to keep the burglars away from my house. I guess shotguns would work too, and I wouldn't have to worry about cancer so much. I'll have to think about this.

I bet birdshot would more than do the job, if you have a full auto Saiga 12 and a 30 round drum, and are not farther than a hallway away from your target.

Life's journey is not to arrive safely in a well preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy schit...what a ride"!!

                LOL.

Yesterday while I was buying PVC pipe to build target stands at home depot, an employee asked if I needed help and I was doing doing with the pipes so I told him. Then he went on and on about he was a shooter, and a NRA instructor told him to get a .410 for HD because you dont have to aim like a handgun, especially at night. Just point and shoot

And that a 9mm will go through all the layers of the walls, and could travel on for a mile and hit someone.

The guy like followed me for 5 isles telling me all this.

000 out of a .410 might be the exception to the rule, but it only gives you 1/3 the amount of shot you'd have in a tactical 00 12 guage and 1/4 the amount in a hunting 00 12 guage.

Yeah, the "He wasn't going to steal anything..." thread in off-topic is a report of a homeowner fatally shooting a burglar once with a .410 (doesn't say what load) so it certainly isn't impossible. Not ideal, but not impossible.

Why not, right? Hey, if bears are a problem then maybe.... For $8.50 for ten rounds, that's actually not as expensive as it would seem like a specialty shell like that would be. Been researching because I'm bored and apparently they are notorious for not completing orders when they say they will, though.

Less Lethal munitions in a "deadly weapon" is always a poor choice and in some areas illegal. I say use what you want...Darwin-ism will sort out the dummies. We need a dose of chorine in the gene pool now and then.
I personally know cases where birdshot stopped an assault (person was blinded in one eye) and a failure to stop with #4 buckshot (both outdoor contacts). There are no guarantees, expressed or implied when manufactures claim their product is the best. Expect a failure to stop with your first shot(s). Plan "B" should always be on the back burner simmering, so to say.
