CZ 12ga Redhead O/U Range Report

Took my new GUN for it's first outing to one of Lou's skeet clinic's. Huge thank you to Lou btw. I have to say that while it was Lou who set this up I was his wife that was running a clinic

Anyway, as I said this was my first chance to break out my new shotgun and as you can expect it was amazing to shoot. I had taken Lou's clinic before, back in June. At that time I had brought my Mossberg 500 pump shotgun with 28" Barrel. As if a pump wasn't challenging enough it was a factory choke at Improved Modified (1 step from a full choke. Also this Mossberg was designed as a HD gun. Hollow plastic stock, plastic foregrip, aluminum mag and receiver. Everything that makes this a great HD gun, light and fast, makes it hard to use for skeet

As such you can imagine the change to a full sized O/U with heavy double barrels and lots of gorgeous Turkish Walnut was like night and day. I swear when I took that first shot I wasn't sure that it had gone off. And that weight helped in other ways. My swings were a lot smoother. I was getting crossing birds much easier then before. This is not to say that I was breaking every clay. I was having significant trouble with my doubles. Not sure what is going on there but it's something to work on.

But overall I certainly felt more comfortable with this gun. I shot from the low position and it shouldered very naturally for me. Barrel selection on the fly is nice except for when you forget to switch it back. Nothing sucks more then calling for the bird, pulling the trigger and hearing nothing but a click.

One outing isn't much to go on but still, for a $800 to $900, gun I'm very impressed. I shot well, it looks great and it certainly made me feel like I was breaking twice as many clays. And at this price point I won't feel bad about taking it duck hunting.

I'll add more to this thread as I get more chance to shoot it.

SE, let your wife try your O/U before committing to buying one. Depends on her frame size a semi might be a good way to go too. or bring her to the next clinic as soon as I have 'em up!

Man, I'm jealous! That gun is worth more than it cost. I want a new one too! Uh-oh, here the comes the wife. LOL.
9mm and 45acp are equally lousy. There's not a dime's worth of difference in REAL terminal ballistics. Get over it.

When researching this purchase I looked at lots and lots of data points but I think on of the things that helped me finalize my decision was a blog over at Shotgunworld.com, this guy is documenting every shot he takes with his CZ Canvasback. The CZ line of shotguns are essentially the same just with added features at each level. The Mallard is the base with double triggers. The Canvasback gets you a single selectable trigger and the Redhead gets you ejectors instead of extractors. Personally I prefer extractors, I'm going to see if there is a way to disable my ejectors. There are also cosmetic difference that get upgraded with each model, but that is cosmetic and being as beauty is in the eye of the beholder I'm more focused on how it functions as opposed to how it looks.

That being said, have I mentioned how good this gun looks

He bought his gun on 12/20/08 and last time he noted the round count it was 16,285. In less then three years and it's still going strong without a single problem.

Took some pics tonight and it's clear that I need a refresher course on how to take gun pics
