870 accessories for 3-gun

Plus, I've heard enough people praise the 870 over the mossberg, quality-wise, that I've started to believe it...

Are there 8+1 mossbergs? I need exactly this mag capacity. Easy to get any capacity with the 870 due to the exchangeable tubes.

Yep, that's the 590 (the bottom one). The top one is the 500A (it's the same price as the 590). I believe it's 8+1 w/2.75" shells and 7+1 w/3" shells. The 500A is 5+1 (almost 6+1) w/2.75" shells.

I don't believe the 590 comes with ghost ring sights. I've got a ghost ring on my 500A and it kinda sucks. I think I'm going to swap it for a hi-viz.

Before you buy a Mossberg go to a match and look at what the "better" shooters are shooting you won't see many if any Mossbergs. Ahh do what you want it's your $$$

Lots of newbies shoot Mossbergs because that's what they have. If Mossbergs were better lots of people would use them. Everybody I've seen have gone from a Mossberg to a Remington. I've never seen anybody go from a Remington to a Mossberg.

The loading gate on the 870 doesn't get in the way it helps slide the round in.

Here's the test. Load 2 rounds in your shotgun. Start at low ready at the buzzer, knock down a popper at 10 yards. Load 4 rounds. Knock down another popper. The "boys" are doing this in low 4's with an occasional run in the high 3's. Those guys are not mere mortals, they are the best of the best.

Myself a really ehhh shooter. I can do it in mid to hi 5's with no fumbles and have gotten into the 5.0's once in awhile. I shoot a limited Benelli.

I don't think many people if any are doing a low 4 second run with a Mossberg.

My heavy metal shotgun will be 870 22" VR barrel with a DMW 9 shot extension tube, and a small Hi Viz site and screw in chokes, break the edges off of the loading area, no sharp corners or edges. IC is the choke I use 95% of the time. Equipment rules change match to match. Some matches limit you to 8+1 or 9 total to start. Other matches make you start with 9 then you can load as many as it holds. If the match has you start with your shotty grounded on the course of fire and empty chamber then you can still start with 9 in the gun. If the match is 9 max at any time then put in your 1 shot plug.

I don't know if the Mossy will let you have a 10 round gun.

Find lo recoil slugs Winchester Ranger, Federal reduced or managed recoil, Breneke. I'm sure there are others out there. Use light 7.5 or 8 bird shot. Fiocchi spreaders are another good investment to have in your car. You might not need them often but they can come in handy. All plates are calibrated to go down with a 9mm. Light ammo will do that. The cheap Federal Wal-Mart stuff is pretty popular. Don't get the Winchester Super Sport stuff it isn't made well and has problems feeding. To avoid the flames if it runs in your gun great. But look at the crimp, many of the shells are belled at the crimp, doesn't make for smooth feeding. Winchester AA and Remington STS are top quality shells but cost more. Keep your chamber clean, shotgun shells (cheap) will have ridges on them and the plastic can build up in the chamber from heat and use.

Also watch and see what people use to carry there ammo in. Decide if you like the shell caddies or loading from a bandolier. If you get the caddies I like the four rounders. I can grab and load 4 at a time. If you get the six rounders unless you have hands like Lerch you'll grab 3 and 3 or 4 and 2. 6 rounders make it harder to bend over. I'm a fat guy so they are really bad. On stages where you have to shoot shot and slugs in the middle of the stage I carry my slugs on an arm band. Not optimal but I don't mix them up.

But hey it's your $$$ spend it as you like.

There is a bunch more to this and I'd offer to help but I have no idea where EPA is.

I seen one Cal Gunner Wulf load a Mossberg 590 pretty fast. What he does is he uses the shell holders that sit on your belt. He rolls the butt of the SG on to the top of his shoulder with the loading port up. He grabs two shells at one time, puts one shell in the port and pushes the first shell in with the second shell. So he is loading two rounds at one time. He has practiced a lot and is pretty fast at it.

It sounds like he is doing well and great if it works for him. Loading like that has a low fumble factor too big plus.

Like I said I'm not real fast.

There are some guys loading like that that are real fast. Have him try the shoot one load 4 shoot one drill.

Most people I've seen using that loading technique are loading off of holders on their arm, shotgun and chest.

NO, the bottom one is a 500A Persuader, not a 590. They come in different variants, just like 870s. You can tell it's a 500 as opposed to a 590 because the magazine tubes are blocked off at the end when the caps are removed. The 590 magazine goes straight through like the 870. So if you have a problem with the spring, you'll have a much harder time replacing it on a 500 than a 590.

The Big 5 Persuader was my second shotgun. I got it for $199 a few years ago when it was on sale like for two weeks out of the year, down from the usual $219 or $239 sales. Overall, it was a decent gun. At shotgun classes, I could load it faster than those with 870s, and there's also the possibility of turning it upside down and just dropping shells in as a previous poster just mentioned. There are a number of differences between the mossberg and remington; you'll just have to search on the forums for all the info you'll need.

In the end, I sold my 500A and still have 3 870s and an 1100. All 870s have bead sights, 18" barrels, a shorter synthetic stock, and factory tube extensions. There was really nothing wrong with the Mossberg, I just decided to standardize on the 870.

It's a benelli with ghost rings.

Ghost rings are not going to make ANY difference when you factor in the time to rack the action between shots.

Ghost rings RULE for slugs at 50yds.

I have my Benelli sighted in at 35yds with slugs.
I can keep them all on an empty shotshell box if I take a supported position.

I would ge the 870 over the 500/590. I have both. Either way you go, send it to Vang Comp and you will get back the best Tactical Shotgun out there. If you can not do the whole package at least get the barrel. Do a search on Vang Comp here, we had a good discussion on it a while back.

Has anyone tried the "rifle sights" on the 870s?

ETA: Ok, I just discovered that there's a bunch of different aftermarket sights to choose from, so I'm gonna stop worrying about that, and just get the gun I want (which is probably the synthetic 20" 870P, like I said).

The first two say "easy to install", the Trijicons apparently require drilling, tapping, and glueing... doesn't sound good to me.

I'd be happy to get the Wilsons unless there are better options out there, or they're not worth it.

One thing to consider if you opt for the Police is that the trigger is noticeably heavier. Not as scary heavy as say the Ruger PC9, but it's still noticeably heavier than an Express or Wingmaster.
