    870 express break in?

I went and shot some trap over the weekend with a brand new 870 express and a few times I had to work the slide release to chamber the next round. It seemed to kind "stick" when this would happen, and Id have to work forward and back to free it up.. I was shooting federal game loads. Is this typical break in or do I have problems. It happened maybe 4-5 times the first round, once the second none the 3rd, and once the 4th.

Yes my shoulder is sore :P

Go to www.aiptactical.com and click on the red link, "Breaking in the 870". Also read the red link "Install and cleaning". If you make a cleaning/Polishing rod like on that link and follow the instructions your chamber will allow for smother extraction. Do this every time you clean the weapon.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

Interesting I was racking it pretty lightly so as not to set off the clay thrower. They had it set to voice controlled and racking the shotgun hard like that article says to do will set it off.

The weapon is designed to rack like you got a pair. You do not have to break it in on the clays, just go shoot a few hundred rounds into the side of a bank, dirt bank not the kind they keep money in although that is common in CA, or at some paper targets. Rack it will authority to start the break in procedure. It will still not be broke in but will be on the way. These weapons are made to last a life time and it takes hundreds of rounds to smooth it out. So get it started, use the rod on the chamber to get the perservative out, bust a few hundred rounds and then go bust some clays.

2nd on this, though part of my issue was I tightened the screws a bit too hard in the receiver for my tacstar side saddle. But yeah put some force behind it, when the RO came and did it for me, I felt like a pansy =(

To be fair, this was my first firearm and first time shooting a shotgun

I'd suggest they may need to turn the sensitivity down a bit on the voice calls. We make all manner of noise at my club and largely only a clear voice with hard syllable in it will trigger the calls.

Yea it's just the way it is there, one guy was talking to his wife while my girlfriend was shooting and the clays were launching like crazy!

But the last time I was there the RO told me if I set it off I have to take my shot, but I had not even racked the slide yet cause someone else set it off racking their slide, so there was no way I could do such a thing anyways...

Make sure the gun is unloaded and rack it about 500 times while relaxing on your couche. Also make sure you clean it if you haven't. Remove the trigger group and bolt. Make sure to look that there are no little pieces of foam from the box in the trigger group as I find that on lots of new guns. Use some high quality gun oil like clenzoil. Soak an old tshirt with it and LIGHTLY coat the bolt and inside of reciever with it and remove any excess it should be a light film for rust protection. Put a drop or two on each rail and put it back together.Keep that same oiled rag in a ziplock. EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU PICK UP THE GUN WHIPE IT OFF WITH THE RAG WHEN YOU ARE DONE! The express cheap finish is a real rust bucket. It is critical that you always oil it and try to get under the rib.

Seriously I went thru 10 or more shotguns searching for the ultimate. The 870 is still as good as any and what I compare all other repeaters to. Could of saved tons of money if only I would of kept my 12 gauge 870, added a 20 gauge wingmaster, and been done with it! Live and learn.

I think this is a error at Remington. The finish process or machining process at the factory leaves some guns with a rough chamber, in my opinion. Thus, they need to be shot a LOT, or polished by the user.

I think a brand new gun should not have this issue, but I believe in quality over quantity.

I have experienced this problem on 1 out of 2 barrels, and hopefully I won't have it on my 3rd which is in the mail.

That sucks man mine was real work horse. The only problem it had is after a few days of hunting and carrying it the magazine cap would work loose. Tighten it once a day it was no big deal.

I have heard of the sticky chamber. Especialy with the winchester walmart loads. The barrel polishing with the drill and steel wool is really easy I've done it on a few old guns.

If I was to do it again i'd buy wingmasters.

It might be a pump action thing, I had a similar issue with my 590 after firing a round. You just need to work action with authority.
