In my considerable experience in the Clay games I have rarely, if ever heard of someone poking fun at a new shooter with any standard field gun shooting trap, skeet or sporting clays. Rather, the new shooter imposes upon themselves a measure of inferiority ...totally unwarranted. Get out there and join in the fun. Shortly after you get your "feet wet" so to speak ...seek some professional instruction, for this, i.e., "quality instruction" not new guns or gadgets will prove to be your shortcut to success!
If you are Nor-Cal check out Target Solutions Shotgun Clinics ...or those of "Feeder". If So-Cal bjl333 seems to be the popular resource.

It's the shooter, not the gun that matters. I've seen guys compete successfully with an 870 express against shooters with high end trap guns. A high priced trap gun won't make you a better shooter, it just makes a good shooter's job easier. I've seen it more than once, somebody underestimate a shooter's skill based only on the gun he was using.
Embarrassing is when you're on the trap course shooting a Perazzi, or nice Citori, and some old codger with an even older beat up wingmaster eats your lunch for you.
I'm sure I'm not the only one whose seen this happen. Besides, what if you pay a bunch of money and decide clay games are not your thing? At least with a good pump action you still have a good field gun, and you're not out a bunch of money..

Heck, buy a used Remington 1100 and enjoy! My son shoots one that I bought for $280. He got fit and added a new pad, + DROS = $430 out the door. Thing shoots like butter and after a month (thanks to BJLs clinic!) he's killing 18-19 of 25 regularly.
Fellow we shot with Saturday was shooting a Kreighoff (sp?) K80, I was drooling over. He said he shoots his buddy's 1100 and can't miss a thing.
Bottom line, $5k clubs don't make you a better golfer and a $5k gun doesn't make you a better shooter so get the 1100 and go shoot it!Comment

Who's got anything to say if you shot 20 out of 25 with a $69 H & R single sho shotgun that you bought off of the used gun rack?.

I've shot for years with "field guns"... and shot well. No one makes fun of me or my equipment. Many 870's, Mossberg 500, 1100, an ancient but uniquely comfortable single barrel 16 gauge single shot, a Russian over / under. It's only in the past few years that my eyes have started to gravitate more to a dedicated gun for clays. I recently purchased another 1100, this one very lightly used and at an excellent price, and am working that up into my "go to" trap gun. With routine maintenance I figure it's got more rounds of trap loads in it than I'll shoot in my lifetime.
But I still keep my eyes open for a good value in a used Browning, SKB or Beretta.

It's not the wand, its the wizard...that being said, the Lanber O/U is what you are looking for the best bang for your buck. $500-700, fits right in shooting next to the Berettas and Brownings on the field. Lots of gun for not a lot of money and in the right hands it can even outshoot the more expensive guns. You can check them out at cdnninvestments.com.

I agree with everything said above but I also understand that desire to get something new
Check out the CZ Mallard. Its the same frame and everything as their more expensive guns just with less of the "features". And it's $480!

A good fitting shotgun makes you a better shooter...reguardless of what you paid.
When you get to be a good shooter...then its time to talk about what the higher price shotguns have to offer.
Also, as an added note, all my shotguns that I use for all the clay games are field guns....I have only found one "Target" shotgun that fits me to my like'n.
Then again, there is always more to try.Last edited by Thefeeder; 08-09-2011, 2:21 AM.Comment
