I need opinions here!

I'm thinking about buying my first shotgun ,and I need opinions and options. I REALLY want a double barrel of some sort. They really hold a special place in my heart, but all the scatterguns I can find are (according to my gun guru) overpriced and crap. He turned me on to this site to find a gun that suits my needs (I would like to be able to hunt quail and possible other pheasant). Can I get some help?

Were you looking for a SxS or an O/U? What is the budget you are looking to spend?

For an inexpensive SxS I've always liked the Huglu in a 20ga. They seem to hold up pretty well with the couple I've owned.

For an Over/Under I'd start with a Browning Citori again in 20ga. They've been around since the early '70s and have a proven track record.

There are too many other selections for me to type it all here. You could most certainly spend more then what these two cost, but it boils down to how much you wanna spend ...

Here are two top things to look for bar none

1) Does the shotgun fit you....no fit, no hit.....bad fitting shotgun are only great at chucking lead and kicking like a mule.

2) Take into acoount that the better quality shotguns tend to shoot much better paterns. Patterns are important in bird hunting. All shotguns will throw pellets down range.......quality shotguns will throw them evenly with less gaps.

Try looking at some older SKBs good quality in either SXS or O/U priced in the $450-650 range for 12ga, I was able to snag a 20ga that is smooth, very accurate and a pleasure to shoot from Calguns.

I would definitely prefer a SxS. I don't really need the perfect gun, I'm just looking for a good first shotgun.

What are you looking to use the shotgun for? If you are thinking home defense, then a long skeet or sporting clays gun might be a little big. But if you are looking for something to shoot clay pidgins with, then any of the above listed would work fine.

What barrel length were you looking for? You said to do some hunting with it, so were you looking for a 28'' barrel then or something alittle shorter?

Probably the best value in a SxS is the Smith & Wesson Elite Gold. Been discontinued, but there's still some new ones around in the $1500 class. Mind you these are made to a $2500 price point.

Pick up a Huglu, FAIR, etc. after and you'll think you picked up a brick.

Most quality double barrels do cost a arm and a leg so I don't blame you for being a bit daunted by the prices if you want something as a all around weapon you can hunt small game at short range with but also use for home defense or have fun at the range with and you don't mind a over under instead of a side by side I found something right up your alley ! Maverick ( Mossberg ) makes a over under model thats under 500$ its like a old tried true tested design mixed with new school ideas like a small rail for sight options or optics and a lower one for a light if you choose with black synthetic stocks / hardware and a black matte finish heres the cheapest I could find it not to shabby for 409$ IMO hope it helps !!!

The best advice I've really heard given was go shooting - shoot everything you can get your hands on and see what you like or feel comfortable with - if you learned on your Pops old long barreled 12GA even the best "fitting" shotgun just won't feel right to you or work as well as you want it to for you everyone is different there isn't one thing that works for everyone that is why there are so many types - this is honestly a matter of preference in my book . I've lost count of how many times I've seen what people thought was a good fit get sold the next week at a loss because it felt right at the gun shop but not at the range when fired just food for thought

If I were you I would call the gun ranges around where you live and see if they rent or let people use their guns if they purchase range time and ammo. Even if they are an hour away this may be the best thing to do, in my opinion.
