    First shotgun?

Looking to purchase my first shotgun maybe within the next 3 months (need to save up). Was shooting clays with my buddy with his pump mossberg the other day and did pretty well, too much fun. I was wondering in your guys opinions, would you prefer pump action or semi-auto shotgun as a skeet shooting shotgun? Who knows I may go into competition in the future. But also Im looking to spend maybe up to $600? Was looking into Remington. Also any brands/models you guys recommend?

Where are you located? There is a few clinics here for you to learn to shoot a shotgun. They can also answer lots of questions about what shotguns is good for you.

A Remington 1100 is always a good bet. For a beginner an 870 could kick a little too hard and the 1100 is a gas auto. It should help with taking out some recoil.

Yeah, i have shot shotguns before, just fell in love this time. I was just checking out the 1100 model and was interested. Sort of leaning towards a semi-auto now. Want to purchase new, but sort of out of my price range haha.

The 1100 is a great shotgun. Also look at the Mossberg spx 930 for a good semi auto in the lower price range.

I just picked up my Mossberg 930 field and security combo with 18.5" bead and 28" fiber optic sighted barrels for $614 out the door yesterday. Pretty good deal on a semi that's had some good reviews.

Check out the Stoeger 3500. It's around 600, has all the accessories you need, and is based on Benelli's inertia system, which is superior to gas systems, IMO.

The Stoeger is to Benelli what the Taurus is to Beretta. Almost exactly the same gun but parts won't interchange. While all teh manufacturers offer Sporting Clays models now, any of the semi autos field models will make decent Sporting Clays guns. Make sure you have changable chokes in case you want to shoot skeet you can put in a more open choke.

Sadly, most field guns will not work as well as Trap guns, in that game the specific trap models with higher ribs, combs, etc., are the way to go. Here's POLICE ACADEMY star (and Western Zone Ladies Trap Champ a few years back) Leslie Easterbrook and her Browning trap gun.

I can't imagine you can't get a nice hardly used Remington 1100 or older Beretta A390 in field configuration on the boards or gunbroker.

Last note: If you want to shoot clays seriously, don't get a Saiga or any other tactically set up shot gun. Aside from looking stupid on the range, their stocks fit is NOT designed for shooting from a low gun. The key to Shotguns is FIT. The gun must be an extension of you. When you throw it up, it shoots where you want.

You can get a "Wal Mart" Beretta (dull finish, plastic stocks, but same guts) for right at your $600 figure. If it fits you (fits most pretty well), that IMHO is your best buy.

If you get into it and start shooting doubles, or skeet, o sporting clays, you'll prolly wish you had an auto. Yes, with mastering, doubles can be done proficiently with a pump, but it is the exception, not the rule.

Can't go wrong with the 3 B's, Browning/Winchester/FN, Beretta or Benelli.

You might also want to look at U/O's as well.

And kick like a mule after a 100 round trap contest. Even the over and unders are heavy in trap models because of cumulative recoil.

The Beretta and Remington gas guns are sweet
Benellis have less moving parts (the Non-Argo ones)
