pistol grip on a shotgun?

I have a Mossberg 500 security pump shotgun that holds 7 shots in the tube, I've been eying the pistol grip stock by Advanced Technology for quiet some time now, what are the advantages of installing a pistol grip stock on a pump shotgun if any?

My original stock works just fine but I was wondering if I will gain any tactical advantage besides the cool looks factor if I switch to a pistol grip stock. I've noticed that the army issued pump shotguns don't have a pistol grip nor the police department cruiser shotguns. But it seems that the swat team do prefer the pistol grip stock.

My shotgun fills the roll of home defense gun and is loaded with 00 buck while sitting at a remote corner sleeping.

Really it's just feelings. If you like a PG on a shotgun, get it. If it's no biggie, you're not missing much.

I like my Benelli M1014 with pistol grip just fine, and I like my Winchester 1300 pump with standard stock just fine too. It's just preference.

Whatever feels/works better on you when you shoulder and fire the weapon should decide for you......who knows- you may not like the pistol grip feel on the shotgun. Tony M put it just right I believe- Tacticoolnes........

I checked those out (the Knoxx recoil reducers)......I actually ordered one for my next shotgun but I just dig the classic look of a nice shotgun....its something about the lines they have.

the main advantage i believe is the ability to hold it with one hand when loading or to shoot it one handed (i have never done this nor would i try). I have small hands so a pistol grip suits me a bit better than a rifle stock.

I recommend the Knoxx recoil reducing CompStock for Remingtons or Mossbergs, especially if you fire a lot of shells and slugs in the course of a day. I've never used a pistol grip on a shotgun but it seems like accuracy might be reduced at more than fifteen yards.

Limbsaver makes a great recoil reduction pad for most shotguns and they attach to standard wood/plastic stocks.

I also prefer a standard stock on a shotgun. Frankly loading a shotgun is slow and the fraction of a second you will possibly gain by reloading weak hand while holding the shotgun in your strong hand with a pistol grip, in any home defense situation, is moot IMO.

There are many competition guys that prefer the standard stock shape - and they reload under the pressure of a timer and much faster then most average non-practiced shooters could hope to.

Ask around on the 3 gun forums for the advatages - they will give you real world, under pressure recommendations. Then try it out for yourself to see what works best.

I don't find PGs on shotguns comfortable: too much recoil put into my wrists. I suppose I could put the buttstock tighter into my shoulder, but then what's the point of the PG? I have to admit that they look really cool!

What about the Knox recoil dampening stocks with pistol grip? I think that Advance Tech stuff is mostly mall ninja.

I rationalized putting a Knox pistol grip folding stock on my Mossy 500 because it would help with recoil. And yes,i did it because it does look kewl too.

Sure, advantages of a pump shotgun are that you basically lose your ability to fire any truly aimed shots and it is more difficult to control when firing.

The only true benefit to a pistol-gripped shottie is that it is more compact, but PG-shotties are usually only used for breaching tools (blowing the locks & hinges off of doors).

If this gun is to be used for home defense, definitely keep the full stock on there.

I made my own spacer for the stock to change the angle so that it was a bit easier to line the sight up

I have the factory Mossberg 500 Cruiser with pistol grip & 20" barrel and it is my HD weapon. I also bought the standard Mossberg synthetic buttstock to swap out for slug / range shooting.

The only advantage (for me) of a pistol grip shotgun is the ability to move around in a confined space, such as your home's hallway and turning through doorways. I have tried to move around with my Mossberg shouldered and aimed and making turns and going through doorways (to check rooms for intruders, etc) is slower and more awkward. Try it within the space of your home and see whether this is a suitable set-up for your HD shotgun.

The disadvantages are less precise aimed shots and that your wrist will start feeling the recoil after only a few rounds of 00. In a HD scenario, the fight will most likely take place in very close quarters (unless you live in a mansion) presumably 10 - 20ft range, so a precisely aimed shot is perhaps not as essential (I'm sure others will disagree), plus this type of fight is usually over within seconds or a few rounds (you'd hope).

The PG also allows me to hang the shotgun on a pair of large padded hooks horizontally above my walk-in wardrobe's door, which is not wide enough for a full length shotgun.


PS: I have the Knoxx Specops Folding Stock on order, which will give me the best of both worlds, without the soreness.
