    Mossberg 500 Mariner

The other day I was at Bass Pro Shops roaming around looking for stuff. Didn't really find much, until I looked across the counter and spotted a silvery shotgun.

Went through the motions of handling said shotgun and....
it's a Mossberg 500 Mariner. This puppy was really cool looking and I love silver as many of you already know.

I owned a Winchester 1300 xtr when I was a teen and brought it to Germany in '83-86 when I was in the Army. This is where I learned how to shoot skeet. Since then, I haven't been shotgun shooting but I do own a Browning 20 ga. BPS.

Needless to say, I bought the Mossberg for it's reputation, but I don't know much about the Marinecoat.
My plans for this shotgun is to bring it with me camping and etc...

Anyone have a Mossberg 500 Mariner?
    Views?
    Recommended accessories?
I'm not big on tacticool, but I would like a nice leather sling and the attaching hardware.

Also, I've never shot a shotgun using the pistol grip and since one came with it I was wondering what the advantages are.

Pics after I pick it up in 10 days.

I have no idea on the Marinecote, don't own one.
As for the pistol grip, a good friend of mine has one on a Mossberg 500, and I shot it a couple of times. Wasn't real happy with the feel, then again I grew up with a normal stock. Let me say my wrist felt it for a couple days. Though I do not know if the grip was proper for the gun, It was a few years back.

The pistol grip is great for storage, tight places and lookin' mean.
Not so good for shooting, I would avoid shooting any round labeled magnum regardless of length.
Check the gun and see if the barrel attaching band is drilled and tapped for a sling mount...if so, Uncle Mike's has nice sling stud and swivel kits for not much money.

I do not like mossbergs with a pistol grip, they make the slide release hard to reach as well as the safety. I put a pistol grip on mine and ended up taking it off.

I just answered my own question.

Any magnum shotshell. At least while in the pistol grip configuration.

My buddy just got an old 500 from his father that was stored on his sail boat for a LONG time. the barrel has rust all over it, the receiver looks perfect (aluminum). He (my buddy) did not clean it, just loaded it and it fires perfectly. Looks like crap but works great. Good times!

Picked up my Mossberg 590 Mariner yesterday.

                  Nice shotgun.
Not going to post a picture because everyone knows what it looks like, via image Google search.

There was 1 little problem that required me to file a little bit of metal off the tube magazine.

I was getting acquainted with my new shotgun and disassembled some of it with no problem except for the tube magazine cap.

After I unscrewed it, looked inside the magazine, spring and etc... I went to put it back together.
There was no way that cap was going to be threaded on! I could not get the cap to engage the threads correctly. If I forced it, then I would get a stripped thread.

                  Busted out the magnifying bifocals.
Took a close look at the male threads on the end of the tube magazine. The beginning of the thread trailed all the way around the tube, essentially creating a micro-thread. As you followed the thread, the pitch and etc...became normal.
I'm thinking that the female threads on the cap where trying to engage on top of the "micro-thread" (that's what I call it, I'm sure machinists have a different word for it)

                  Busted out the file!

Gently filed off the long micro-thread so that there would be a more acceptable "thread engagement".

Put the tube cap back on no problem.
In fact, I took it apart and reassembled a few times to ensure it functioned properly.

I have fired magnum through my Mossberg with the ATI pistol grip. It hit hard, but was nothing to go crying home to mommy about.

I would have preferred a conventional stock, but with three shooters and one gun, adjustable was a must even if not ideal. I shoot straight and fine with mine. As for cheek weld, with the ATI I would have to buy the accessory cheek pad.. and I should because it would be an improvement on the telescoping stock and make it mucho better.

Good choice on the Shiny Marine OHOD.

Ahh, I forget that people run PGs only. I could understand on something that was an SBS but for a normal shotgun.. meh. Count me out of PG only magnums.

                            same here.
Also, in some sort of macho (aka stupid) attempt, I fired the PGO with a round of 3" mag 00 buck by selier and bellot. My webbing of my hand was bruised so bad I coulden't hold a pistol for more than a week. Needless to say, It hurt... ALOT.

I'm just going to keep the regular stock on.
