3 Gunners: Ghost Ring or Tactical Rifle Sights

Looking at possibly a Benelli M2 pistol grip but not sure on what sights to get.

FO bead with 10/22 rear adjustible seems to work fine for the Benelli deathstalkers. FN SLPs are pretty good too.

I did my first match with a maverick security with a bead sight. Then I later upgraded to a mossberg 590 with ghost ring. I like the ghost ring better especially when you might have longer slug shots. I thought ring would be harder to hit flying clay pidgeons, but that wasn't the case. It just takes some getting used too.

I've never tried tactical rifle sights on a shotgun. I assume you mean a red dot or something. I would imagine that they would work quite well.

I've got ghost rings but most of the top guys use bead fronts with something similar to a 10/22 rear.

If you are looking at a Benelli M2 for 3-gun, the hot ticket is the 21" vent rib barrel (if you can find one!).

Field vs. pistol grip is primarily a matter of preference (pointability, loading technique, etc). The field (straight stock) has a bit of an edge on reliability over pistol grip stocks.

For shooting slugs, many of us have installed 10/22 flip up rear sights on the vent rib. On the other hand, many Benellii 3-gunners run their guns without a rear sight, just sighting down the vent rib.

Dave at Dave's Metal Works in Covina will supply and install a 10/22 rear sight on your Benelli for a very reasonable price.

I just ordered another 21" vent rib M2 (Benelli has them in stock RIGHT NOW!) and it'll arrive at my FFL shortly - move quickly if you want one - they are made in batches and when the batch runs out, they become somewhat hard to come by I'm putting a Burris FastFire Speedot on this one to use as an open shotgun.

I have been plugging along with the stock fiber optic front only. i shoot trap and clays with the same setup on my other Benellis and am pretty used to it. My M4 has the stock ghostrings which i've tried on 3-gun stages - it works alright, but I personally prefer the the fiber optic only front - just easier for me.

edit to add: the pistol-gripped M2s (usually the tactical models) are much easier to come by - 21" and 24" field M2s seem to dominate the 3-gun sport, though =]

i've shot matches with my M4 (pistol grip) and my M2 (field stock). hard to say which I prefer or which would work better for you. Perhaps try shooting a couple back-to-back rounds of skeet or sporting clays with a pistol grip shotgun and a field stock shotgun to see which handles better for you? Personally, I weak-hand reload pistol-gripped shotguns better, but "feel" more comfortable shooting a field stock shotgun. no clue why. you should try both if possible.

FO front sight with a flip-up rear.

Ghost rings are cool, but a bit too busy for 3-gunning...especially when there are a lot of reactive targets, and pigeons are flying all over the place.

My Remmy 870P has a ghost ring rear with a FO front. Works great for slug accuracy. But if there is no light, the FO front sight is useless.

I an using an FNH SLP for my 3-gunning shotgun.

Ideal setup is a 21" Vented rib barrel and put a fiber optic up front. I use ghost rings on my 18" and it is a bit busy. It makes slugs really easy but hardly necessary considering how little we use slugs when compared to shot. Just practice and know where your gun prints slugs.

Bead or FO. Ghost rings are too "busy". Most shots are close enough you don't need the precision of an apeture sight, but you do need speed and there's nothing faster than the bead.
