    Mossberg Maverick O/U

I went by Big 5 to buy an 8-shot 870 express and saw a Mossberg Maverick over/under which was pretty cheap ($350). After handling it, it felt good in the hands and shouldered well so I went ahead and bought it too.

I don't recall ever seeing an over/under for that cheap. I'm not expecting a Browning, but at the same time I hope it's not crap in a box. Anyone have any experience with this gun? If so let me know, if not I'll make sure and post once I get it and take it for a run.

Updated: Added range report on post #20. Happy shooting.

Looks like it could be a featured down version of their Reserve series O/U. Those guns are Turkish made, IIRC, and have been hit and miss depending on who you talk to.

Extra choke tubes, beyond the two you get with the gun, can be had from Carlson's. If the gun is based on the Reserve, 12 gauge tubes should interchange with Benneli / Beretta square thread types. I'd be interested to know if this Maverick O/U interchanges with something else.... such as Mossberg 500 tubes.

Yeah I just saw the Big 5 ad myself. I'd be interested in a double barrel field/clay gun. Definately report back on your first impressions of the gun.

I too would love a review. The reviews I read online were slim pickings, but most speculated it was cheap and wouldn't last. As far as I remember they only handled the gun but did not shoot it.

Sounds like I'll be the Guinea pig on this one. I get it next Thursday and should be able to run it through it's paces soon after that.

That is what the ad says, but while Big 5 can be a great place to get a deal on a gun, if it is in the limited selection they carry, they screw their advetising up. I know that the ad for my 870 showed a different stock than the one the sold me and despite showing it to the store manager before buying the gun, and he even called the buyer to make sure that was how it came, he claimed not to remember what the ad depicted when I went back after getting the gun home and discovering the difference. Big 5 then claimed I had to bring in the ad as they could not just look it up. They finally gave me a credit that was enough to cover the part but not its installation.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think they mean to be deceptive in their advertising, but they make mistakes and their sales people generally don't know what they are talking about.

If the gun fits you that's the most important thing. Unfortunately Big 5 keeps a trigger lock on all their guns and wont take it off to let you fondle the trigger, and that's kind of a big one for me.

I saw the Big 5 ad showing the Mossberg Maverick O/U. Went down to look at it. I was hoping that since it was labeled "Maverick" and not "Silver Reserve" like their last O/U it might be US made. No such luck. Made in Turkey by Kahn. I'll pass.

I called Big 5 and the ad was wrong. It only has 28" barrels as they are selling it and the stuff about the 18 1/2 is a mistake. The guy I spoke with doesn't even know if you can get one with an 18 1/2" barrel.

I too have been eying this one. I am excited to hear how it shoots and feels. I hope some positive reviews come out. I have been looking for an o/u and I dont really need an expensive one. I already have an early 16 ga A5 that I take out for the dress up pheasant hunts. I just want a fun one for quail when the auto and pump get boring!!

                            Looking forward to the report!

Just pulled the trigger on one. I was really surprised that she felt good when I handled her. Sure ain't the prettiest, but she did feel good. Not the greatest of finishes either. But as a wise skeet instructor said, "Buy the shotgun that fits. Forget about how it looks or the price!" We'll see how she handles on the field.
