Went to Big 5 and Turners and they're having a sale.

I'm torn between 3 tactical guns:

Mossberg 590 = $319

or

Remington 870 express magnum = $319

or

Benelli Nova Tactical = $249


Oh man. All have their positives.

590:
1.) Holds 9 in the tube
2.) Slide release is much easier to press than Remington
3.) Shorter pump
4.) That heat guard vent thing looks cool

870:
1.) Holds 8 in the tube
2.) Has a matted finish
3.) Has a very solid feel to it

Benelli Nova Pump
1.) Also a very solid feel to it
2.) Factory Ghosts Sites already installed
3.) ONLY has a 4 tube magazine I think....but I think it can be easily extended


Which one is more reliable of the two? Less prone to jamming when it really counts? Which one seems like the better deal?

I found the Mossy and Remington stuff for sale, who has the Nova on sale? I own variations on all three of these guns. It is real hard to beat an 870, the Mossy is a fine gun too, but if it was mine to do I would get the Nova. The ghost ring sights are really nice and I love the Nova that I bought my kid for his 16th, his is the basic realtree turkey gun and it is a nice gun. I would look into what is involved in an extended mag for it and base my decision on that. I know they offer a recoil reducer for it that is rumored to work quite well. It is nothing more than a mercury filled chamber that goes into the butt stock, if I recall it went for about 50 bucks or so a few years back.

The standard Nova can't have the stock changed, I believe, so if there's any chance you'd want to do that, it would be a consideration.

I'd probably get the 870, but it's a coin toss between them all if they have the features you want. They're all great shotguns.

I'm a Mossberg guy. I have 2, a 500a and a 590A1. I love them both. The normal 590 is basically the same as the A1 except for the A1 has all metal parts. My A1 has Ghost Rings though. I find all the controls to be exactly where you want them. I like having full access to the mag tube both physically and visually so you can easily tell if you are empty or not. IIRC, the Remington and Benelli have elevators that cover the loading port so you have to move it to check the mag.

I think you are in a win win here. You can't go wrong.

Which feels the best in your hands? Which mounts the best on your shoulder? Where do your fingers naturally go when you are looking for controls?

The Nova is @ Turner's.

The Nova and the Remington have a similar feel to me. Very solid.

The mossberg is nice too. I would probably buy the Mossberg in a heartbeat if it was the 590A1, because it has a parkerized finish AND ghost ring sights, but it's just the regular 590 with a bluing. The heat guard is cool though

After seeing how well the Mossy's hold up compared to the 870's under the harsh conditions in the Navy I'll always choose a Mossy first. They are built a bit looser but this is an advantage in the worst of circumstances.

I recently purchased the recoil system for my Nova. There are 2 parts to buy - a retaining bracket and the mercury tube. The whole setup installs with just 2 screws. The going price for both components totals around $120 locally. I was at Bass Pro in Mesa and I noticed that Benelli is starting to sell the both components in a kit (as opposed to 2 separate parts). They were charging $110 but it doesn't show up on the website.

The Benelli-made mag extensions are getting harder to find and their price has gone up. TacStar makes a Nova-compatible mag extension at a lower price. I don't have experience with this brand however.

One negative to a mag extension is you no longer use the original magazine cap that comes with the gun. The mag cap is well designed and doubles as a tool. You can disassemble the whole gun with it.

I've got the 590A1 and an 870 in tactical form, and the Nova in sporting form, and I'd have to give the nod to the Mossberg. It seems to feed more reliably. My son has trouble full cycling the Nova, and I seem to have to work harder to shoot it. The Mossberg works, first time and every time.

The 870 has the advantage that you can get more aftermarket stuff, it seems, but it's kind of in the middle out of the box.

I've always been partial to the Remington 870. I've owned several 870 Wingmasters over the years (higher end versions of most 870's you find today). In the old days, the Remington's were the pump shotgun of choice, but the Mossbergs are very well made as well.

I don't have any experience with the Benelli pumps, although I'd get a Benelli M2 over a Remington 1100 or 11-87.

Play with the pump actions of all the guns for a while and see what cycles the smoothest and feels the most solid. I bet it will be the 870

I can't decide either... I almost made an impulse buy of the m44 AND the 870, but big 5 won't accept lease agreement/utility bill as proof of address. ...but they will accept a fishing license that I could buy from big 5 right before i purchase the gun(s)..

$290 for the 870 - is it worth the trip to the DMV to get 'official government paperwork'? or is there anywhere else I could get 'official government paperwork' with my address on it?
