    Type of Shotgun for Clays

I'm looking to pick up my first shot gun. Main purpose is for the range and HD, but I'm looking to shoot clays as well.

If I picked up a Winchester SXP Defender or 18-20" Mossberg 500 will I be able to shoot clays? I'm probably going to shoot at Prado, but I don't know their rules and whatnot. I know they make combos such as the Mossberg 500 field/defender combo but I really like the Winchester SXP and prefer it if possible.

    Thanks for the help

you could buy a krieghoff, and the breaking clays part is still up to you

yes, you can use those at Prado, many people break many clay pigeons with both of those shotties

      Clays

The best for clays IMO is a 28 ga. HD 20 ga. or 12ga. Depending how might be using the shotty. A smaller stature person will might be more comfortable with a 20ga. That is my choice. My 2 cents.

I guess I should really be asking,

What is the difference between a HD shotgun such as the SXP or Mossberg 500 Defender VS a shotty with a longer barrel and choke system when you shoot clays? My assumption is you just get less spread using bird shot, but I really don't know for sure. I only shot and know about pistols so I'm a completely new to the subject.

You can shoot clays with short barrels, no issues unless the range has a minimum barrel length. My range allows them and they work just as well as my 30" o/u.

Its a little tougher to shoot clays with a short barrel gun, unless the barrel has screw-in choke tubes. The B-5 Moss combos are pretty good. The short barrel for hd, the longer barrel with screw-in chokes for clays game.
If you must have the Winny then look into how much for a additional barrel. I am not familiar with the sxp so I can't tell you good/bad.
If you check back in a week or two I'll have additional clinics for skeet lessons. We can provide a loaner gun also so you don't have to buy a gun just to shoot in the clinic. This will be the best way to learn properly shooting a sporting shotgun. The link is in my sigline. Good Luck!!!

Just saw your thread. I'm definitely interested! I was itching for a shotty for years, then watching top gun kind of just topped it off for me. I'll definitely keep an eye open so I can sign up for when you have open classes. Thanks.
