590 with Big 5 sale

Okay, so I've been holding out on getting a pump shotgun for a while now. I've wanted a Mossberg 590a1, but so few of them pop up in my area, and people like to charge an extra limb for shipping them out. I'd definitely want a 20" model, with no pistol grip, but don't have many preferences outside of that. Anyhow, the price has been keeping them a dream for me. And I know it sounds silly, and doesn't have much use, but I REALLY REALLY REALLY want a bayonet lug on my shotgun.

So anyhow, I check the big 5 ads today, and see a 590(non-a1) 20 inch, bayonet lug equipped, shotgun for sale for $379. It's within my price range, but I'm wondering if it's worth that much money. 590a1's start at 50 to 100 dollars more, but come with sturdier parts.

So I have a few questions and alternatives that I'd like to pose:
1)Is a the 590 worth 379 plus taxes and fees? Is that a "good" deal?
2)Is waiting it out for a proper 590a1 or saving money on a 500 better alternatives?
3)I have an 870 wingmaster with nice wood furniture and a 28 inch barrel. Would it be more economical to turn that into a home defense, or needlessly tacticooled shotgun.(I'm fully aware I'll never need these upgrades, but I want the aforementioned features anyway lol)

870> mossberg. Get a shorter barrel for the 870 and call her good. FWIW that is not a "good" price for a 590.

option 3 clearly seems best budget wise, they have the 500 at big 5 for more than $100 less when the sale is on, "basically" same gun which is what I did...and comes with two barrels

I was in the same situation as you minus the 870. After doing alot of research I decided on the Mossberg 500 20 inch barrel. The 590A1 is nice and I like the fact it holds 8+1 rounds, but I didnt appreciate the extra weight or the extra price. The 500 20 inch holds 7+1 but for some reason mine holds 8+1. The plastic trigger guard is no big deal and you can change the safety for a metal one. I bought mine used for around $200 and used the extra savings towards a Hogue 12 inch LOP stock. I like it much better than the 870 I used to have.

590A1's seem pretty hard to comeby depending on model. I just got a model 53693 (picking it up Sunday), for $610, and those seem pretty hard to find in stock anywhere. Pretty sweet setup out of the box.

In my opinion it completely depends on the person and what they / you are going to do with said shotgun and want it to do for them / you ultimately .

Old school as it may be I was always taught to use the correct / best tool for the job in that which it was intended to do and or purposed for to get the best end result not just the easiest or cheapest route .

I feel that the same general logic applies here . If your buying this to use solely for home defense weapon / to protect your home and to be quite frank possibly shoot a human being in your house / close quarters not animal in the open outdoors / outside you need a firearm intended for such, set up as such trained with as such to be left as such to be at the ready . Not to say you can't do that with the current weapon that you have configured differently for that application and leave it that way only to throw the longer barrel on at the range / hunting trips and only you and you alone really know if you will have confusion between the one barrel length / bore / choke set up and the other or be better off yet with a completely different gun and if not your about to find out it seems all due respect ; )

With that being said and out of the way do you or any other gun fan really need a reason / excuse to buy another gun let alone one you really seem to want - I know if I wanted a Heavy barrel military grade 590A1 in my sweaty little hands a Big 5 light barrel 590 wouldn't do oh wait I did and got one : P

Don't loose hope you can get a new 18.5" 6 shot Ghost ring sight 590A1 or a bead sight 20" 9 shot version now days for about 75-100$ more than the Big 5 one your looking at or less for a 18.5" with bead sights I got mine used for a really good deal and lucked out but it took me months to find it and I had to jump on it asap to get it when I did find one and drive almost three hours round trip to get it ah the things you do for love jk lmao .

it is too bad you dont live near me there is a 590 at my local shop for $225 out the door
but with that said i would go with #3 but if you want a 590 then save and get the 590 he11 you only live once why not get what you want

I have a 5 year old 590A1 20" (MilSpec). I've added the Knox anti-recoil and a surefire forend. 600 rounds or so though it shooting tactical sports and used as my primary HDSG.

Pros:

Sights: Those are some fast ghost ring sights. Better than the smaller aperture LPA rear sights they stuck on the 930spx. The large front orange blade sight is fast to pickup too.

Weight: soaks up buck and slug felt recoil due that tank gun barrel!

Strength: everything is steel, not alloy or plastic. No way anything is going to break/crack.

Bludgen: if you hit someone with that barrel, they are going to feel it!

Cons:

Slower: It's slower to wield than all other shotguns, because of the weight (don't be deceived with the unloaded weight... stack 9 rounds into that buffalo, hang some tacticool stuff onto it and it is a beast! It's slower to get on target, to transition to new targets, and even to reload.

Tiring: holding that heavy gun up in a ready position for any length of time, combined with some shooting, just wears you out, unless you are buff.

Reality Check:: We are not going to re-live a WWI trench warfare battle! We will not use/nor ever need an extra pound in the barrel, an extra round in the mag, ghost ring sights or a fixed bayonet to defend ourselves! (It is a one shot, one kill weapon; just get your hits. and you don't need that extra round. We should work on skilled shooting and reloading anyway, not trying to hang every last round off a gun). That tank of a barrel is a solution looking for a problem as well; how many of you out there have bent a shotgun barrel? Just don't use it as a crowbar and It''ll be fine! Oh ya, same goes for the sights: as fast as this ghost ring sight setup is, it's not faster than a good bead sight (Orange fiber is my preference). You hang a surprising amount of weight on that gun for those sights, and they require a bad stock-to-cheek weld in order to use them (actually, it requires a "stock-to-jaw weld" in order to see though those sights). If you want more tacticool sights than bead, then get the bead, and then save your money for a small red-dot!

Make my 12-gauage lite and fast everytime... the ft-lbs of energy is all the same out the working end!

I agree with SoCalXD, keep the gun as light as possible. The regular 500 is plenty study and the 6 shot model is the lightest pump shotgun out there.

It's not that bad. It's a bit on the heavy side but its doable. I love shooting mine and I haven't really felt the downside of it being "too heavy". But if you're worried about weight, stick with the #3 option or get a 590 not the a1.
