    870 Wingmaster choke options.......

    Hey guys,

Could someone download the lowdown on the wingmaster series? There seems to be many options or varieties of these.

I am a noob to the shotgun but i know i want to shoot clay, sporting clays, and skeet. I realize one usually has a special shotgun for each sport. I am just a recreational clays shooter. I am willing to deal with the shortfalls of the shotgun vs the different sports.

I have made up my mind on an older 870 wingmaster. I see versions with fixed chokes or skeet barrels. I was under the impression that these shotguns usually come with 3 chokes. I am looking at a 28" barrel to be a happy medium for all three sports.

    So can someone school me?

Nothing to add to what you know. The weapon comes with a 28" Vent Rib barrel that is threaded for Rem Chokes and takes any Rem Choke made. You don't need a special shotgun for each sport as you can change chokes to fit your need. Also there are 111 barrels made for the 870 in 12ga and they fit any 12ga 870 so you can change barrels to fit your need. Your 870 can be a trap and skeet gun then change the barrel and it is a deer gun, an HD, a turkey gun or a water fowl gun depending on the barrel or chokes.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

The older guns all have fix choked barrels. The 26" are Skeet or Improved Cylinder, the 28" are Modified and the 30" are Full chokes. Thats the way these classics come. The good news is the older fix choked barrels are not too expensive and the usual practice is to have a couple. You could have the barrels threaded for choke tubes also. Companies like Briley or Colonial can have choke tubes install, Briley being the preferred ones with competition shooters. The newer barrels come with Remchokes, but they cost a little more to get into.
I would recommand going to a skeet clinic to learn the basics of clays first. I have a clinic in my sigline to link to. If you are in Norcal you can click on to the link in the middle of my thread, the Norcal skeet clinic is hosted by Thefeeder.

thnx...been keeping my eye on your thread from awhile back. I have only shot trap on private land shooting singles and doubles. It was really informal but i shot well with a std 870 modified choke.

So are the barrels labeled on the older wingmasters with what type of barrel it is? I had my eye on one and it stated "skeet barrel" but i have not seen it physically to check it out. I guess if i check the end of the barrel and it's threaded then i know i can change the chokes?

Is it cheaper/better to change the barrel out or have it threaded?

Also how is the barrel measured? Just over all length barrel removed?

Is there a way to know the production year by serial numbers?

          YEAP!!

Is it cheaper/better to change the barrel out or have it threaded?

Ideally the threaded barrels are more convenient.

From the end of the bolt.

Is there a way to know the production year by serial numbers?

I think Remington can provide that info.... aippi?

            Remington barrel date codes.

This can be spotty, at times, with shotguns like 870's that accept many different barrels. I sold or traded a couple over the years that I bought new but which I later moved along with a different barrel than what came with it. If you find no code at all on the barrel that would indicate the barrel was made between 8/1999 and 10/2001 as they ceased to use codes during that period.
