    Going to Burro Canyon

I am going to Burro Canyon for the first time to get use to firing home defense ammo; 00 buck and slugs. All my practice to date has been with firing target loads at clay pigeons.

I only have 20 rounds of buck and 10 slugs. I can buy old bowling pins to shoot the buck at and of couse get a paper target there for the slugs. They won't let me shoot at bottles, cans, or milk jugs.

Any suggestiions as to what else I need or should bring. I am shooting a Remington 870 with an 18-1/2" open cylinder barrel and a 28" field barrel with chokes. Am I even taking enough ammo to make the exercise worth while?

You can bring watermelon to shoot. But personally I would bring a friend so you can shoot some clays with. A lot funner with a friend. Any who, I think you should be fine with that much ammunitionto test the spread
Bounce a ball in Football that's a fumble. Baseball, no bouncing at all. Bounce a ball in Hockey, well that's a mandatory drug test right there...

That's not enough ammo not even close you need to have atleast 100 buckshot if your planning on shooting slugs especially at distance your at a disadvantage if your using a bead. I assume you have the shotty for a HD application I think a bead sight is really fast and faster than ghost ring sights. If your a civilian there is no reason for you to practice with slugs anyways other than just to have fun with it. I would practice tons of reloading drills even when you shoot pigeons practice speed reloading.

Always bring EXTRA ammo. Burro ammo is really expensive.

Bring some gun lube and some basic tools, should you need them.

Don't forget non shooting supplies: In n Out, Subway, or whatever snack you enjoy. I always get hungry up there. There isn't really anything to eat up there.

I agree with you 100% about sights. In fact, one friend is suggesting that my trap shooting might improve if I were to ditch the bead from my long barrel.

Yep, I can't forsee why I would need slugs for home defense, but I want to try some should we have a SHTF situation. While I doubt such ever arises, if it does I think they might be needed for personal defense or for bringing down game. The big reason for shooting slugs is to have fun.

Are you serious about laying down 100 rounds of buck? I imagine that is possible, since some tell me that standard loads aren't all that much nastier than 3 dram target loads of 1-1/8 oz shot. From playing with them and lighter target loads, though, I have learned to respect the difference 1/8 ounce of shot can make. When I first got my 870 and before I had a clue how to use it, target ammo beat the crap our of me. Now it doesn't bother me a bit.

You are correct that I have an 870 with a simple bead front sight. Most of my shooting will be done with it, but I also have a chokeable 28" vent ribbed field barrel with a simple bead sight. I plan on firing a few slugs through it's skeet choke. I plan on comparing my accuracy with slugs using each barrel.

Then, after acquiring some familiarity with standard 00 buck, I am ordering some low recoil shells for HD. Federal makes a low recoil round for civilians that is supposed to be the same as what they are marketing for LE. (I may be able to pick some up at Turners on my way out to the range which would be good since I want to shoot what I may have to use.)

I guess you haven't been to burro. You have to go up and down the mountain to get to the shooting range. You will only get a signal if you go back down hill.

The point about cell phone reception is a good one. I have a family that freaks out if it can't the old guy. Wild guess but the reason there is no cell phone reception is the range is in a canyon of the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains; something Northern California Calgunners wouldn't know. I shot my first gun, a .22 single shot rifle, at Fish Canyon not far from Burro in the very late 50's.

Tools is also a good idea as is bottled water. As for food, I will grab something in Azusa before heading up into the canyon.

I am not too concerned with running low on ammo. If I'm not too sore, when I get done with the buck and slugs, I am shooting a couple games of trap at Prado on my way home.

                    Thaks for everyone's thoughts.

Don't shoot slugs out of anything tighter than an improved cylinder unless you want your barrel to be destroyed. If your shooting slugs through a smooth bore buy rifled slugs not sabots. If your serious about finding a 00 load for HD then buy as many different brands of 00 000 loads as you can since they will not all group the same out of your shotgun.

What your looking for is the tightest pattern at distance whichever that is that's what you want for HD you are not looking for a Hollywood spray affect. If you don't want to get ripped off by Turners buy ammo online. If you don't have time until your going to go shoot maybe this weekend go to Ammo Brothers and check out what they have. If you want to just shoot 00 Ammo Brothers has 25 round boxes of XM127 for 15.99 it might group fine in your gun at Turners the best you'll be paying is usually $1 per round they never have deals anymore.

I hear you about Turner's and I don't trust them a bit, but their price for a 15 round box of Remington Ultra HD Home Defense seems to be in line or better than on line shops; $26 and change. The ones with bbs. The same stuff can be had with a mix of #2 and #4. As for the spray effect, I finally learned that that is not what shotguns actually do and that the idea is usually to keep a tight pattern. I want either that or the Federal low velocity buck with flight control.

I would check out Ammo Brothers, but I will pay more for gas than I would save, plus it is hard enough scheduling enough time to get up to Azusa from here.

Dhena81. I forgot to mention the choke and yes, the slugs I had and the ones I bought this evening are rifled. As for the choke, my understanding is that it is alright to shoot slugs through all but the tightest chokes, but that they are most accurate fired through the more open chokes like cylinder, improved cylinder, and skeet. Since my short barrel is open cylinder that works and since the most open choke I have for the long barrel is a skeet it should work fine.

Go to walmart before, pick up the 100 value pack $21 of buckshot..They sell the winchester super x slugs for around 4$ for 5
They sell clays there too...a lot cheaper then the 16-18$ they charge at burrow.
If you have a partner you can rent the skeet machine for 20$ all day
