I can attest to the ease of conversion. I just finished converting mine and my dad's. Go for it! You'll be so much happier.

      What is the "922 conversion"?

I was under the impression that using a 6-10 round clip would make it a non-sporting gun, and thereby require me to make it 922r compliant, of which it is, from factory, not.

I didn't realize that a conversion was simple. I have very little gunsmithing experience, so I assumed attempting the conversion myself would be out of my skill range. I will do some internet searches and look into doing the conversion myself. I would, however, still be interested in any information on a quality gunsmith, in case something goes wrong in my attempt to convert it.

I'm going to quote myself from another thread here (and please correct me if I'm wrong):

But you can look for yourself, too:

has the text of 922r on it (you have to scroll down a ways)

Has the text for 925(d)(3), which describes in broad terms what's prohibited,

              and

Which, if you scroll down, defines "Semiautomatic Assault Weapon," which seems to be the general standard that a gun needs to meet in order to NOT be considered a weapon with a "sporting purpose". Note that it reads:
              (d) A semiautomatic shotgun that has at least 2 of—

              (1) A folding or telescoping stock,

              (2) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon,

              (3) A fixed magazine capacity in excess of 5 rounds, and

              (4) An ability to accept a detachable magazine.
Since the S-12 in CA these days should already have the BB installed, this means that its magazine is not "detachable".
To answer the previous question, when I wrote "922r conversion", I was referring to bringing the foreign parts count down to the legal maximum.

I converted mine by watching the YouTube video made by Carolina shooters. Check it out.

Thanks for the info. I was unclear about what did and did not constitute a non-sporting gun. I also received some erroneous information from other sources. You, however, seem much more credible and offer actual references to support your information. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me.

Thanks for the tip. I have purchased from Carolina shooters before, but I did not realize they had produced instructional videos. I will definitely check it out. Thank you very much.

                      Not that much more.
It's around $100 including the piston and furniture.

If you want a conversion done the right way by very competent gunsmiths contact any of the following for your conversions.
                        Sjgunguy(calgun user) from Valkyrie Arms

                        PRK in Fresno
                        Or
                        Tom Cole of Cadiz Gunworks.

Either you will probably have to ship it to them but it will be converted the best it can be!
You won't be dissappointed by any of those I listed!

Show me where in the world I can buy it all for that cheap.

Heck, I'll pay you five bucks if you can.

                            $44 for the FCG

                            $16 for the piston

$12 for the retaining plate if you need it

$35 for the trigger guard if you want it (optional, so I'm not including it in the total)

$11 for the pistol grip (US made)
                            $29 for the buttstock

So you have exactly $100, plus another $47 for the retaining plate and trigger guard. That's 5 counted US conversion parts, retaining the original handguard, so you could even eliminate the $16 piston and still have the 4 parts that you need and be at $84, leaving room to add the $12 for the retaining plate plus my $5 and still keep it at $101.

Fair enough; I'm a man of my word. I'll still end up paying a bit more since I want to replace the handguard with a US-made one, but that's my own preference. Also doesn't include the pistol grip nut and screw. PM me.

Don't sweat it... Just buy me an iced tea whenever we meet.

Ya, I caught the PG screw and nut after I posted, but I did originally say "around" $100... I was quite surprised when my first number came up to exactly $100 before I backed out the piston!

That $100 figure was going from memory on the Saiga x39 conversion that I was considering a little over a year ago, so when you questioned it, I thought that maybe prices had jumped over the last 14 months.

BTW, they're out of stock right now, but if you would prefer wood:

Keep the Tapco PG, add the piston back in, and you're still 922(r) compliant. You would have to add the clamp on handguard front ring (not sure if they make one for the S12) and you'd still have to locate the top piece to cover the gas tube, but it's under $20 for a BPU Romy buttstock and "donkey dong" foregrip, potentially with trench art!
