I tried some of those in a pump, Winchester AA low recoil target loads, and it seemed that it was a ***** cleaning the barrel within the first inch or so of the forcing cone. I wonder if the problem with gas systmes is part lower pressure and part the rapid fowling of the system.

Marlin hunter. If you would clean the chamber properly that would not happen. A simple wood dowel, some steel wool and a drill will end that issue. A sample is on my web site on the link "Install and cleaning". Do this and avoid cheap target ammo and you have no issue.

I hear nice things about the 870P, but I can't say much about it. The 930 turns heads at the range, and it's a ton of fun to shoot. I was lucky enough to get one that didn't have canted sights or over-torqued rail screws. Keep that in mind too, buy the latest example of the 930 SPX if you choose to go that way.
        Why do you say this?

The troubled production run of the 930 SPX's (before August's new batch) contained some shotguns that had canted front sights and the occasional accessory rail that had its screws over-torqued into the receiver at the factory.

The last I heard, Mossberg was tripping over itself to get this addressed, but in the meantime, people had to send their barrels in to get correctly aligned sights. The receiver rail issue did not occur as much as the canted sights, which in itself did not occur too frequently, but this sort of thing should not have happened in the first place.

I got a good example, as did a few people I know. I took the plunge and got an updated one with the new charging handle.

How do you find out if you have the newer updated version?

Your shotty will NOT have canted sights, might have a small riser under the front sight tower to address elevation issues when sighting in, and will have the rounded "tactical" charging handle instead of the sport one.

Maybe updated isn't the correct word. Fixed? NOT screwed up? Expected? Even if you did get a bad example, and I don't think anyone would now, you could always have Mossberg take care of it.

So are we saying the 930 is reliable with all the different types of ammo; the good, the bad, and the ugly??

My 930 has been utterly reliable with cheap birdshot. Never had a failure of any kind. I've only fired small quantities of defense loads through it; but it worked fine.

                      I'd trust a 930.
