    870P VS 930SPX

I understand that I am asking for a comparison of a self loading to a pump, but have narrowed it down to those two best options within the 500-600 price range. I just can't see myself purchasing SLP or M4 even though I can, so just wanted to hear some input that would help me with the decision. TIA!

It would help to know what it will be used for and if you have any special needs.

If SHTF, getting into competition and general range fun the 930SPX is likely a good choice.

For real world HD and a more versatile platform that will multi-role to the maximum then my money is going to be on the 870.

Well 870p it is, since in my opinion SHTF can be classified under "real world HD". The only reason I didn't mention HD is because I feel that my pistols are better suited for HD, as I live in a condo complex with neighbors.

I have a 930SPX, and I would have to say for a SHTF scenario, go with an 870. The 930 is peachy and all, but to shoot every type of shell reliably, you're going to have to break in the thing. A pump won't choke on a shell it doesn't like.

I hear nice things about the 870P, but I can't say much about it. The 930 turns heads at the range, and it's a ton of fun to shoot. I was lucky enough to get one that didn't have canted sights or over-torqued rail screws. Keep that in mind too, buy the latest example of the 930 SPX if you choose to go that way.

If you wan't dependability in an extended situation in which it may be difficult to find parts, I would go with the 870. If you want others to be able to use it, perhaps a youngster or a female, you may want the gas operated SPX. If you want something to put food on the table, get something that takes chokes. The pump is more likely to take any 12 gauge ammunition, while auto loaders may not work well with lighter loads.

If we are talking HD/SD, I think the 930SPX wins everytime, assuming you first break it in properly and exercise reasonable maintenance.

For genuine SHTF/WROL/TEOTWAKI/TATF ... a pump action will be more reliable under harsher conditions and with less regular maintenance. A Remington 870 or Mossberg 5xx is your friend.

I also have the 930spx, great gun! but as a SHTF gun... i dunno. Being a auto loader, just the factor of it being semi auto brings up the possibility it could become a problem eventuraly with cycling. I have ran about 80 rounds in my spx without a problem. but 80 or so rounds is nothing compared to the thousands I should have until im properly familiarized with it. I did how ever have a big problem with the sights, the thumb screw did break off and the rear sight was useless, it took mossberg over a month to replace. So if I could give any advice it would be this:

if your going to get a 930spx as a SHTF, make sure to have replacement sight parts on on hand in case anything were to happen. or get a shotgun that has the sights actually attached or pinned to the receiver. Mossberg does not have you send the gun in, so all you have to do is call and complain that you need a new one, because the thumb screw cannot be replaced because its flared at the end of the threads. make sure they send you another rear sight assembly right off the bat.

Are you sure? The SLP and M4 are chok full of awesome. To quote Ferris Bueler..."if you have the means, I highly recommend it!"

I don't have a 930, but I have an 870 that I purchased new between 1995 and 2000. I would not trust my 870 in a SHTF situation. I have had far too many stuck shells in the chamber where I had to bang the stock on the ground or my foot to get it to open. I would feel much safer with my Benelli auto.

yeah, i see wut your saying, but I bought 250 rounds of 8 pelet low recoil shells that I just found out my gun will not cycle! ehhh! weird thing is it cycles the 9 pelet low recoil stuff just fine with tighter groups then the 8 pelet shells.

Wow. That is good to know. I know the Benelli recoil action will not work on light loads which is why they came up with the gas operated M4 for the military, but I thought the 930 was designed to compensate for light loads.
