So I'm looking to buy my first shotgun and from my research the 870 seems like the right choice. My only question is what version and does the mosey oak finish make difference. The gun will be used for dove, quail, pheasant hunting, and sporting clays. Maybe down the road some waterfowl. Any suggestions?

Same adivise I give to all first timers.
Before you buy
Shoot some of your friends hunting or sport shotguns
Rent at the local range
There is no one shotgun that fits everyone or is liked by every one......its the one that fits your body type and feels comfortable to shoot for you.
If you have your heart set on an 870....I would buy a used 870 Wingmaster 26-28" barrel with ckoke tubes for hunting. -
For hunting only?
The Remington mentioned would be nice. Mossberg offers some less expensive alternatives. You might want to go to a gun shop and check out a few different models for feel since they'll all recoil and operate similarly....
Too bad Charles Daly/KBI went out of business... their shotguns were pretty decent and you can't go wrong with the price. At least I never had any customers complain about the many dozens I sold. Oh well.Comment

I have hunted everything from quail to geese with my 870 wing master since 1983, I still love it to this day and she has never failed me. Being a 2 3/4" chamber is a little limiting, But she was built in 1965 and is still going strong.
As the feeder said not everybody likes one brand or type of gun, Rent a few or shoot your buddies before you spend the money. For me it's the Remington 870NRA Life MemberComment

My Wingmaster was used for duck hunting way back in the days of lead shot. It has shiny blue metal and a shiny walnut stock...............never had a problem scaring ducks! A stock express/Wingmaster 870 with 3" chamber and choke tubes will work just fine for what you want.

The Remington 870 is a great first shotgun. Everyone and their mother has owned one since 1950. Can't go wrong. Great price and tons of accessories. However, be sure to shoulder one before purchasing. Besides looking for a reliable and affordable shotgun, you want to make sure it fits you. Does it feel comfortable when you shoulder it? I also recommend to compare it with other shotguns. It's kind of like buying a pair of shoes. If it fits; buy it! Good luck
