Skeet Distances are short for open chokes. It is all about the lead for the station you are on. The birds fly the same every pull, you know exactly where they are going. On the end stations, they go straight away from you otherwise it is lead and follow through. Shooting Trap with a HD gun is like trying to drive a green with a Putter in golf.

Can I use this shotgun for Trap shooting?

If your already a damm good wing shot you can break clays with anything to a degree.
If your starting out and want to become a good shotgunner, leave the HD shotgun at home. A plain o'l hunting shotgun will be much for you to start with.
When you become a decent wing shooter from the low shotgun position...dumping slugs and OO buck at stationary targets with your HD shotgun will seem like a toddlers game.Last edited by Thefeeder; 12-22-2010, 7:48 PM.Comment

For sure it can be done, but it will be a little harder to shoot clay that's flyin further away if you miss on your first try, just speakin from experience. So to answer your question it depends on how serious you want to get into skeet shootin, and more likely what you think your reaction time will be on the initial fly.Comment

beat me to it, skeet is closer. but then again, if he uses slugs, he might get luckyso......You guys with small gauge and open choke guns.....Why don't you shoot Skeet? It is designed for both small gauge and open choke shorter barrel guns. Trap is shot with 12 gauge and to make it more difficult, you move further away from the house. To make Skeet more difficult, you use smaller gauge guns but nearly always shot with open chokes. Also, there is a doubles station with Skeet that is shot every round. That may be a CG first!

You can use anything you want to shoot trap but short barrel no choke guns tend to spread the shot more and maybe only a few pellets will hit the clay and break it into a few pieces but that still counts as a hit.
There is a HUGE sense of satisfaction in using a long barrel choked shotgun to vaporize a clay into a dust cloud :-)Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...Comment

Sure you can use anything you want. At least it gets you shooting clays. At the range, start talking to the guys that shoot trap and many of them will even let you shoot their trap guns. That way you can get a feel for the difference between a standard shotgun and trap shotgun. Either way, go shoot and have fun.Comment

Just a point. All the replies focused on shooting trap with a short barrel. My post warned you about the model you gave the link to. Research that weapon and you will most likely avoid it as it has a poor reputation.JD McGuire, Owner

Couple of guys at my club bust 25s with their .410s pretty regularly.
But seriously, in formal trap shooting (on a regulation field) a longer barrel is better if you want to get good results. The shortest barrel I shoot is a 24 inch on my 500. That length is better suited for skeet and I shoot it very well, but it's not optimal for the trap game. All my other guns are 28 inch barrel or longer.
I've shot good scores jacking around with an 870 riot gun at the 16 yard line, but you have to nail them super quick. For informal shooting over a portable machine or hand thrown, you can have a jolly time with a short barrel for sure.

got a Rem. 887 as a table gun at the last fnra dinner...
thought it was a bit of a piece of crap at first...
then when dove hunting with my son and he wanted to shoot a 12 this year...
so he shot my 870 and me the plastic wonder...
I almost couldn't miss... best dove shooting in my life...
don't know what happened...
now it's the full length gun...
but it shoots tremendously well...
still think it isn't as solid as my 870...
but it seems to work really well...Greebo, as a matter of feline pride, would attempt to fight or rape absolutely anything, up to and including a four-horse logging wagon. to one their own, if you can handle shooting trap/skeet with it, go for it! though just fyi, some ranges will have length requirements, so be forwarned. I know that oak tree gun club in santa clarita have not unbanned the uses of tactical shotguns, since they straight out said that the economy has affected it, (that's what they told me verbatim) and allowed one of our guys in our party to shoot his remington tactical ghost ring 870 , and man did he fare well the first time he shot!
Likewise, like some of the guys said, if it's something not too serious about , then you're ok, but in the future and you decide to get serious into competition, you'll might want to consider another gun!Be the change that you wish to see in the world.Mahatma Gandhi

Oak Tree is great like that, they have a very relaxed staff that is fine with mostly anything as long as you are being safe! While most trap ranges have formal policies about barrel length, some can and do make exceptions. I went to Oak Tree with tujungatoes and they allowed him to shoot his .410/.22 combo gun. He shot about the same poor scores as I did with my 870 in .410 but, we had fun. However, I don't know of a real trap or skeet range that makes exceptions for mall ninja guns.Comment
