Don't forget the closing of Miramar either. This was just posted a few days ago:
        *********************
SDSSA has received correspondence from the Commanding General of Marine Corps Installations West that a final decision has been made in regards to the shotgun range. The marines are moving forward with the environmental process and cleanup. Consequently SDSSA’s license to occupy the shotgun range that has been home to shotgun enthusiasts since 1975 will be terminated on 31 March, 2011. The marines have ensured us that we will be given a reasonable amount of time to remove our personal property, equipment, and structures from the current site.We have been advised that we will be contacted by the Commanding Officer and his staff to begin a discussion of the close out process.

MCBCP's skeet and trap range is a military range with military ordinance. Meaning it does not require a clean up of lead the way a civ range does. Be greatful we still have a range is southern ca and come shoot. 3.50 active 4.50 retired 5.50 club member and 6.50 civ with a sponser per game. Prices are changing next year so come shoot while its at its cheapist. m

+1 On MCB Skeet & Trap Range. Absolutely a beautiful facility, top-notch staff, and the RSO's are courteous, friendly & professional. I am up there personally on a regular basis and continue to be impressed with the whole organization. Don't forget they have a Pistol/Handgun range open to the public as well.

They have tried every scheme they could think of to get us shut down and were always beaten back by the community. This was the only public park that didn't cost the city a dime to maintain and even turned back a good abmount of money into the community every year. We made days available for Boy Scouts, Cops and charity shoots. Then the antis went off about the "potential" that a dry stream bed located across a paved road and over 1/2 mile away "might" be impacted and the range - which already has a 70 year accumulation of lead on it cannot take another shot and must be closed immediately. BS. No science, no testing, nothing but pressure and the Marines caved. It was easier to cut and run than call out the anti-gun activists for what they really are.

On the other hand, if you buy the argument, then by their own logic and rules, they must close Vado del Rio which shoots at a seasonal stream about 1/10 of a mile away and presents the same if not greater environmental danger.

The reality is that 10 years from now we will all be looking at the hillside that the last trap and skeet field in Orange County shot over and this "critical environmental hazard" will not have been touched and the marines skeet range will still be going great guns.

BTW, its not that easy for civilians to get on at Vado del Rio. When I shot there, you had to be a guest of a member and had to be with them. Plus, its a real drive to get to and you are supposed to register your guns with the Provost Marshal (base police). We used to be able to hunt on Pendleton too - small game by permit and deer by DFG lottery (G10). They put a stop to that as well.

There was a move to close the base a few years ago. That's some of the most valuable real estate in the country. 35,000 acres, 20 miles of beaches and an airport. If they can't be good neighbors, maybe its time for them to move on.
                  Mr. Burns,

Thanks for the thread bump! Look forward to meeting you at the MCB Skeet & Trap range. I believe they are open every day except Mondays & Tuesdays. BTW, there have been several shooters from the San Clemente club that have been coming up and shooting as of late, and they seem very happy with their new shooting spot, several Miramar shooters as well. And of course they are welcomed in.

Anyone who would like to come shoot is welcome to stop by the range. You do not have to register your guns with the military police unless you keep your weapon on base over night.A sponsor is necessary to shoot as a civ but who doest know some one affiliated with the military.a

Depending who you consider to be "environmentalist," the Marines (ie- the Navy/US Gov't) definitely has control over their own property. If they are impacting drinking water sources or fish/game habitat, local regulatory agencies can have their say, but in the end if Uncle Sam decides whatever activity at the facility is mission necessary, the gov't wins.
The Navy has their own environmental personnel, but they are not going to be the ones inclined to initiate a cleanup or shut down.
As far as studies etc go regarding the location that was shut down, testing and reporting is fairly expensive (plus the legal battle). Maybe they see allowing public access to the base range as a compromise.

So I read in another thread that one can only come on three times a month as a civi; same for the trap range?

I would love to start shooting trap seriously again that's a three time a week deal, not month.

Anyone know fer sher if you just need someone to vouch for you, whether or not they have to be a member there, or just a Marine, and whether or not they actually have to come with you, or call first every time?
