Well, happen to stumble upon a pretty much new, never shot IAC model 1887 replica for $425 local in the classified section here and decided to swoop on it. Will be out of the 10 day this Sunday, can't wait. Had thought about the Coyote Cap but that is almost a $500 difference once shipped to my FFL. I may end up getting a Coyote Cap later on anyway...

        oh yeah

http://www.hinterlandoutfitters.com/...r-p-28598.html Also check out the current Cowboy Guns magazine there is an article on a 12 g color case hardened reciever. I do not know the make or importer but it is VERY nice & around $900+. Very much like this one though http://www.cimarron-firearms.com/Shotgun/Terminator.htm or this one http://www.gunreports.com/gow/specia...ge_2344-1.html I like my IAC 97 and only paid $300 for it awhile back.

I played with one of those chinese lever-action 12s that had been cutdown and the stock had been cut to a pistol grip only. It looked very cool.

But, it was extremely challanging to work the action as you had no leverage on the lever due to the absence of the buttstock.

Wow, pretty fun to shoot. I lucked out with the more current crop of these Chinese replicas and had no issues with feeding either the Rio Royal Buck as well as Federal Flitecontrol 00 buck. I'll run it stock for a while then possibly do an action job on it.

Out of curiosity, what is the appeal of a lever action shotgun over a pump? I can see it if you want history. But the pump is faster and easier to stay on target.

Of all repeating arms, lever actions are the most fun. Scientific FACT.

                            Lever scatter

I have been using an 1887 for Cowboy Action for a few years now. Very cool, very manly. The manual of arms is completely different from any other modern shotgun. Loading is through the back of the receiver with the lever open. Pushing the shells into the receiver under pressure results in nicks and gouges in fingers as there are a lot of sharp corners in there. There are a LOT of parts flying around in there.

Stroking the lever requires effort. You cannot light stroke this. You have to make sure you push the lever ALL the way foreward in one positive motion. If not, ejection will not properly occur. It is not light. Mine has been worked over to get the smoothest action possible.

One cool function is the "drop 2". With the gun unloaded or just run dry, you can open the action, hold 2 shells in your hand and "drop 2" shells on the carrier and close the action, then you have 2 quick shots.

This is a very cool unit. There was a good reason Winchester pulled these off the market. They were not dependable. Granted, they shot black powder and that gums up the works. The double barrel design was easier to produce and much more reliable and above all, much more robust. One other thing, there is a reason that these repros come with a lever wrap, a few strokes without the wrap and you are left with bleeding fingers. This thing make you pay in blood to play. I LOVE it though, my favorite 12ga but it will never be a "go-to" gun. You just have to realize the limitations of the design.

Yeah I know what you mean as using it as a primary scattergun. I actually use a Rossi coach gun as my primary go to hd shotgun along with a model 19 snub. Had a chance to really go off on the 87 rep. and one things for sure, greasing metal to metal contacts during movement makes a world of difference. From what I have seen doing an action job on it isn't all that hard to do yourself. Going to function run it a bit more then go from there. I had read that quite a few knowledgeable lvr action gunsmiths went to China to improve them from their ancestors as well as made sure norinco production was up to snuff in the earlier years or manufacturing. You are right, makes you pay a bit in pain to shoot... tough love i suppose hahaha.
