    Quality of current production 870

So Im in the market for a Remington 870. I currently own a IAC 982 (yes the Chicom version of the 870) but being limited to 18.5 inches gets boring when you want to keep up with your friends in the clay game. I chose the 982 before because of price at the time ($150 OTD in 2007) and I was just a Freshman in college needing protection for my house. Also too, many guys that I know prefer the older production 870 because of finish and quality compared to the newer sets.

Are the current Remington Express 870 (Im looking for a 26" barrel or 20") still have quality control issues?

Forget a Mossberg. 870's are as high quality as they ever were but most people opt for the cheaper finished plastic guns. A new Wingmaster is probably 700-800.00 these days and the junk finish plastic stock guns are less than 300.00. The bones of the gun are the same, the fit and finish are not so the cheaper guns occasionally need some rough edges taken off. They still have high quality steel receivers and internals that Mossberg and others do not.

Best thing is to search around for an older 870 or mossberg 500. The new ones these days just seem to have more problems than what they are worth.

My express has been just as reliable as my police magnum. I do like the Parked finish of the 870P better though

There are no more issue with any Remington then any other manufacturer out there. Why is it that all the leading customizers build on the 870? Wilson, Nighthawk, me, we all build on the 870 Express for the most. Look in patrol cars all over this contry and what do you see?

There is only one 870 and they differ by finish, furniture and a couple very small inexpensive parts. You will not go wrong with any 870 model.

Taking a shotgun course was an eye-opener for me. I used to be a 'pistol guy', now I can clover leaf slugs at 75 yards using open sights with my 870 PMax (Ok, not alla time but those are damn big holes even if they aren't touching).

My back-up is an older Police Magnum I picked up for $300, keep an eye out for trade-in's. I'm building an Express Magnum for my step-father for Xmas, it's a little rougher but not bad at all.

As far as Mossberg's, I don't know. I just don't care for them. I have one here in the house and it's waiting to be given away. The action isn't as smooth and it just, I dunno, it isn't an 870 I guess.

Bud's has trade-in's fairly often, Keisler's as well but they deal with LEOs only. Good luck with whatever you pick up!

You might find 870's in police cars, but you'll find Mossberg 590's and Benellis1014's being used by US Military in the Big Sand Box. And I'd venture a bet there's as many there as in anywhere else and getting used 10X more.
We all have our favorite brands for our own reasons and you won't convince me a Remington 870 is $100 better than a Mossberg 500. And Hans Vang builds plenty of Custom Mossberg 590A1s

Much to do with Mossberg putting in a much lower bid than Remington. Military goes with cheapest, not necessarily the best. I'm in no way knocking the Mossberg 590, but no way I would keep my 500 over my 870, or a 590A1 over the 870P. Just to show I'm not just biased against something I don't own Missing from the photos are the other competitors: 870P, Winchester 1300, Daniel Defense middy, and my S&W 99. The DD, S&W , and 870P are my go to weapons

Remington did not enter a weapon into that particluar Military bid. There are thousands of 870 being used in all branches of the US Military and more being bought every year by all Branches. Special Forces type Units buy the 870 MCS as fast as Remington can build them. The MCS is simply and 870 with the ability to quickly change stocks and has a 3 shot tube. There were Military Armorers in the Armorer Classes I attend at the Factory so I know the Military will keep buying them.

This is a tired this -v- that when you bring this mess up. The OP Asked about the Remington. Yet every time you Mossberg guys jump in with this mess. Ya'll got some kind of complex like a bunch of little kids hearing grown ups talk and interupting them with some silly mess so you can be the center of attention. "Good Grief" take that mess to another thread, no one asked you.

I'd look for a deal on a used wingmaster.. Better finish than the current express.

The police trade ins at Budsgunshop tend to be the same price as a brand new 870 Express. I am however looking for an older Wingmaster, but I'll see what my local shops has in stock.
