mossberg 930 spx (should I get one?)

Hey guys! so heres my thing.... I have 2 pistols and looking to get a shotgun, im looking for the best shotgun for my money, ive been looking around and looks like the mossberg 930 spx is a good choice, Ive only had one shotgun before and it was a FN police tactical pump. This mosberg is a semi auto, meaning im not used to anything that not a pump. The primary use of this SG will be to take to the range, and also my "to go to" gun if SHTF or if ts the only thing I can take with me in a bad scenario. what do you guys think? anyone have one or looking to sell theirs? thanks for the input.

✟ In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain."✟

I saw one of these the other day and it looked very nice. It was well built and heavy. This seems like a nice product from Mossberg.

When I first got my 930SPX I was of a mind that it could never be my primary SD shotgun, as I just could't get my head around the idea of a semi-auto being anywhere near the reliability of a pump gun.

Several hundred rounds later with minimal maintenance ... the 930SPX has made me change my mind. I am equally comfortable with using my 590A1 my 500 or my 930SPX as a go-to gun should the need (God forbid) arise.

Personally, I just purchased an FN SLP. The shotgun is a dream to shoot. (Highly recommended)!

If you can find one i would snatch it up. I went looking for one this weekend and no one in my area had them. I was quoted prices ranging from $637 at Turners to $680 at Fieldtime sports.

Then i checked on Gunbroker and saw several 930 SPX's listed for under $600 but by the time you calculate shipping from out of state sellers you are right back to the low $600's. I figured i would just buy one locally. Turners puts you on a waaiting list but they are not sure when they will have any.

i have a 930 tactical, and its a great shotgun. A couple of things i learned from mine is that when you first get it, you must take it apart and clean it, but do not over oil the gas system. I over-oiled mine and after about 300 rounds it became a bolt action shotgun. haha

Yes you should get one. (if you can find one in stock?) Mine was hard to find on the shelf. Only 1 shop in all of Vegas had one. They go quick.

I have a930SPX with a pistol grip stock and I love it. I recently passed 1000 rounds through it and I can honestly say I am impressed with it and I have no reservations using it as a defensive SHTF shotgun. It field strips and cleans up incredibly easy. Most importantly, it cycles cheap WalMart low brass birdshot all day everyday like water through a water facet! At least mine does anyway? Maybe I got lucky???

I've had a Mossberg 930 and it was a good entry-level semi-auto. It did have some reliability issues (i.e. shell stop slide lever fell out) and couldn't shoot slugs very well at all. However, the price point was $500 compared to my current FN SLP ($800) so keep that in mind.

I must have gotten a lemon, mine was really nice for the first week or so. After that it just became a nightmare. I eventually cut my losses after trying to do everything I could with it. But I hope you get a good one!

                          Can you be specific?

What was wrong with it, and what did you try to do to remedy the situation?

                          Just curious.

FTEs, 1 FTF, didn't cycle rounds a couple times, and at one point after you would fire the shell case would be stuck. It took a lot of manpower to get it out.

It was recommended to me that I should take it a part and make sure everything was in good condition. Check to see if there was missing parts, cracks, dents, anything odd. After that I cleaned it up and left a little oil on it. Took it back out and after every shot I would check it out and try to identify the problem. No luck, I then took it to an armorer but he said everything looked fine. So I started buying different types of shells and it still had the same problems no matter what I used.

Eventually I gave up, thinking back I probably should have called Mossberg. I really liked the shotgun though, everything about it was nice. Maybe I'll pick up another one and see if things are different

You might want to wait until after the 2011 Shot Show.
Rumor has it there will be a 24" non ported barrel, 8+1 set up for 3 gun.
Brian Enos forums there is a whole topic about the 930 from guys who really shoot.
There is a Texas gunsmith who is doing modifications to the 930 and may have done Jerry's 930, over 2200 rounds and seems to be running fine.
If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting
