    Questions about a shotgun

A friend of mine recently inherited a FNH shotguns, knows nothing about it and was looking to get some info it. He was interested to find out things like approximate value, years that model was made and if their are replacement parts for them such as a new stock. Any info is appreciated.

Basic Browning Auto-5... a field grade perhaps, looks to be in good shape. They started making them in 1902 and there have been a lot made, more than a million I think. Remington produced some during WW2 when FN was occupied by the Nazis, production at FN restarted in 1952. Model was discontinued after 1999. Value can vary greatly with age, but unless it is a rare variant or higher grade model they aren't big dollar guns in the secondary market IMO.

These are recoil operated, meaning the force of the recoil cycles the action. The barrel actually moves back and forth to drive the bolt. Some say they kick like a mule, but I'm not like that. My uncle had one in similar grade to the one pictured that my cousin has now and it lets you know when it goes bang, but I never found it unpleasant

As to date of manufacture, Browning maintains a page of serial number ranges, engineering changes, etc. Find it here. You might also encourage your friend to download an owner's manual from the Browning site as there are peculiarities with the operating rod relative to low and high power ammo that must be understood before using.

        ><

        From the barrel markings
        1920's Browning A-5 (pre import of 1927)
        2 3/4" shells
        nitro proofed

The reciever is pre 1950....You have to ckeck if the serial # on the barrel and the reciever and see if they match...if they do then its a pre 1927 reciever

Wood has been refinished and sanded
Reciever I would say also reblued (color is not right)

        Great shooters
When empty the first shell loaded into the mag, it will automaticly load into the chamber....This guns were marketed as the fastest loading shotgun.

It does not have any collector value due it being refinished....just shoot and enjoy. I have seen simular ones in the 200-300 range

FYI...NEVER SHOOT STEEL SHOT THROUGH IT

Go to Brownings website for info on steel shot and older Brownings.

              Also, Google is your friend.
