Is there a place in the SF Bay Area where I can learn to shoot skeet?

As I mentioned in a previous thread, my wife has mentioned interest in trying skeet or trap ("shooting that flying thing").

Before committing to a shotgun purchase, I think what would be best would be if we could go to some range, rent (borrow?) a shotgun and take a lesson. I've learned from trying to snowboard, that it makes all the difference if you learn from a pro (or someone very skilled) versus just trying to make it up as you go.

I think it would make a fun date (assuming we find a babysitter) and might sway her to the light side of the Force

    Thanks!

I don't know of any outdoor ranges that rent shotguns but I know they have trap & skeet at Chabot , Sunnyvale rod & gun & Los Alto rod & gun . You might try the Lake Merritt shotgun club .

Metcalf in san jose has guns for rent as well as coyote valley. none of the other ranges have rentals. those would be your best bets.

If you are anywhere near the North Bay, Valley of the Moon Trap Club has public shooting on Sundays. Novice and first time shooters are welcomed at Trap #7 and there are club officers and experienced NRA certified coaches there to lend a hand. This effort is championed by the club's Membership Secretary, who always has at least a couple of his shotguns with him and will loan them to new shooters to help them learn. If you get hold of him in advance through the club he can set something up for you.

For what it's worth I'd get feet wet with trap before moving to skeet.

Link to Valley of the Moon Trap Club site.

          Where are you located?

Coyote Valley has a pretty good setup for what you've described.
Sporting clays is a fun and safe shotgun sport for the entire family. Mechanical traps are used to throw clay disc targets in varying directions allowing a shooter with a shotgun the opportunity of a sporting challenge anytime of the year. Sporting clays is commonly referred to as “golf with a shotgun”.

Yes, there is a place in San Francisco...Pacific Rod and Gun Club @ Lake Merced

I shoot there most weekends and I'm willing to show you the ropes and provide marginal shooting advise.

I'll be there again the weekend 10/30

When I say "skeet" I'm a noob and mean "shooting the flying clay things".

Thefeeder, I'm going to keep you in mind! It's hard to organize time away from the kids, but maybe I can sneak off (without the wife!) first to get some learning in before taking my wife.

              I'm in San Mateo.

+1 for Coyote Valley sporting clays. They have an 'experience package' which includes all equipment and a basic lesson which is reasonably priced.

Note: sporting clays is not the same as skeet but it seems that's not important to you.

I'd highly recommend taking up on this offer; Thefeeder is a terrific shooter. "Marginal", ha! He's way too modest! BTW, I've not shot since our last pistol silhoutte match... I can't shoot until next year

You're totally new? You can try the manual throwers at Los Altos Rod and Gun Club. Bring your wife so you can learn together. It is easy to operate and you can ask for help from the RO.

Bring the kids. They can tromp around Lake Merced or ride bikes if they're not going to shoot. Pacific Rod and Gun is a great place, and if you have somebody to show you the ropes, it doesn't get any better than that. (I grew up close to there)

Also, Los Altos and Sunnyvale are both fun for learning the ropes, but they don't rent. I go to Sunnyvale often, and could bring a couple shotguns, but I'm not a very good shot.
