getting first shotgun have ammo questions

I've alway been a handgun person and don't really know anything about shotguns but now it looks like I have a shotgun coming my way. I know it's a Mossberg 500 12 guage pump action. Is there a certain type or light load ammo I can get that kicks less so I start learn to shoot it without killing my shoulder?....I am a 5' 3" female if that matters

I'd eventually like to try to shot clay pigeons. thanks!

Take your pick of game load or try to pick up some low recoil rounds if available.

Keep an eye open for my Threads. I have an introduction clinic for skeet shooting. My coach had a quite a few female shooters run thru his clinic. Click on to the link in my Sigline for the skeet clinic and read about it from other students.

NO !! Do not get the Mossberg yet !!! The gun is way too long for you. Unless its free then go ahead. We can always fit the gun a little.

You can get certain trap/skeet loads that are pretty puffy
If needed add a butt pad to the shotgun

I would look into one of these:

LimbSaver makes high-quality products like recoil pads and accessories for the archery, firearm, and hunting enthusiast and beginner alike.

My wife shoots a Mossberg 930 autoloader. We use whatever is cheapest at Wallmart, usually 100 shells for $23. #8 shot usually, sometimes it is #7.5

The recoil pad seemed to make a lot more difference than a shooting vest with a recoil pad. We both have browning vests with a decelerator pad, but to be honest - I think the limbsaver does 95% of the absorbing.

We are casual shooters, but want to get instruction at some point as well.

Thanks for all the info guys!

On the shells how does the numbering work? What is the difference between #7.5, #8 and #9? Is that the weight of the ammo?

The mossberg is free that's why I was going to get it. I think it has an 18" barrel. Why is it too long?

i would look into a youth model
my mom and my wife share a rem870 youth in 20g. you could get one in 12 as well.
the stock is shorter my wife is 5'1" and it still looks a little big. my 870 is huge she cant reach the front grip.

getting first shotgun have ammo questions

18" is too short for trap in my opinion. At Oaktree I don't think they will even let you shoot that shotgun.

#8 is typical for shooting clays. The larger the # the smaller the pellets. #00 (or double ought buck) has large pellets - around 30 caliber I believe. That stuff kicks a lot harder than birdshot (#7,8 or 9) which is what you shoot for trap.

Not sure where you are inVentura county, but Oaktree in Santa clarita has weekend group classes that are very inexpensive and will get your feet wet.

I agree 18" is too short if your gun is going to be mainly used for clays
18" is good for home defense
I would suggest something north of 24" for clays

You can purchase extra barrels for the Mossberg

Okay, I had thought shooting clay looked like fun but if the gun is too short for it I'll just keep it for home defense backup duty.

Maybe I take it out to the countryside and kill some evil zombie cans.

                      Great idea
it would make a good home defense gun with the correct load

Get a Past recoil pad (what I use) http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.com/past/ or a Limbsaver http://www.limbsaver.com/2010/produc...pads/index.php

My Past recoil pad greatly reduces recoil discomfort. Past even has a model for women that fits under your clothing http://www.battenfeldtechnologies.co...ield-for-Women

                        Read the reviews http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=640773

                        Edit to add:

Because of your stature, consider getting a shorter stock. Try the standard stock first. If you use a Past pad or Limbsaver the length of pull might be to long for you. Consider this shorter stock (I use one) http://www.hoguestore.com/index.php?...oducts_id=4615

                        Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

getting first shotgun have ammo questions

I'd still give trap shooting a try. It's a lot of fun - my wife really enjoys breaking clays. Any range will let you rent a pump action for a few bucks.

Birdshot at walmart would be fun or cans. Less recoil in those loads. They have some home defense loads that are softer recoil. When I get to a computer I will look them up.
