From my prospective I think about it this way. Remington 870 Is a great gun for the money. I paid around $300 for mine. My first shotgun for shooting trap and skeet. The guys at the gun store told me buy the cheapest shells to start off . I did that and had a problem of fte. Those were Remington game loads. I was a little pissed at that point but calgunners put me on the right track to get the problem fixed. (buff the crap out of the cyl). After doing that a couple of times my 870 express runs like a champ. I can't tell you how much fun I have with it. As far as the matte finish goes, be forwarned it likes to rust, so stay on top of it, keep it oiled. Remember this is an entry level shotgun! May be the Browning and Italien guns that cost 6 times as much don't have these problems.
I like the fact that that I can hold my own, with a cheaper gun that I can afford. It may need a little tinkering and care than the great gun I would love to own, but this is what I can afford. It works for me and it will work for you.
