My new mossberg 590A1 hits the ground, i know i know where was my carrying case well like the dumbass I am I left it at home that morning. So now the barrel of my mossberg has a couple of nice size scratches on it any suggestions on how to some how clean them up? or touch them up? it has a parkerized finish in case your unaware. Wow that was extremely helpful thanks for the tip! First of all It was the 1 and only time I dropped it and secondly that comment was absolutely not needed. I already know I was a dumbass by letting it drop in the first place but I did so now Id like advice on how to fix it if at all possible, if not then I guess it sucks for me.

Get a bottle of Outer's Cold Blue for steel.
Clean the surface first with brake cleaner or rubbing alcohol.
Dab the cold blue into the scratch with a small brush or twisted q-tip.
Works best when surfaces are warm.

I keep a bottle of Cold Blue for Steel and Aluminum Black on hand at all times because stuff happens.

Here's the link to Outer's, but most gun shops stock these products.

            ^^^ This.

The first scratch hurts the most. Now it's not "new" anymore and you can relax and enjoy it.

Seriously... calm down. A gun is a tool. Are all of your shop tools in the same condition they were in when you bought them? No matter what care you take with them, they will always show wear, and yes, even signs of abuse. Show me a man who has never used a wrench as a hammer and I'll show you a man who has never needed a hammer and only had a wrench within 5 feet

Well it all depends on what he meant by "character" and yea I know its going to have some scratches here and there but when I purchase anything over $500 I like to take care of it as much as possible...

True.... I'd be pretty bummed myself, it's not a basic $200 "Big-5 Security Combo"

But like I said... I wouldn't sweat it.... the first scratch on a gun or a car always hurts the most.
And ya... it hurts more when you know you could have prevented it.... somehow, parking lot door dings on a new car hurt less than the wife sliding a cardboard box across a dusty hood

take it easy! character is what makes your gun one-of-a-kind! yeah, it sucks now, but it will blow over. if i get a scratch that bugs me bad enough, i just touch it up with a sharpie so it isnt so obvious, and call it a day.

if it is blued finish then fixing it is easy. Polish out the scratch and then cold blue. Parkerized is a little bit trickier to get it looking right. I would love to hear tips for fixing parked guns. I think the 590A1 is parked?

So, you use this as a duty weapon? If so, I wouldn't worry about it. A black sharpie will hide the scratchs until there are enough of them to justify re-parking it. When that time comes, look me up and I'll park it with you for free or the cost of supplies. I do usually travel from socal to Tahoe a couple times a year so, I might be able to meet you along the way. Until then, sharpie or cold bluing will work fine. There's even a cold bluing pen on the market.

Since parkerizing is a chemical finish that occurs to bare steel in a 200 degree tank of parkerizing solution, there is no fix other then refinishing the barrel. However, the cold blue idea simply hides the scratch and helps protect the metal. Nothing will replace the finish except as stated, reparkerizing the barrel.

If you use the cold blue you may find that is enough to meet your standards. After a few years on duty a new park job would be in line as barrels tend to catch all the dings first. Since it is Mossberg only the barrel is parkerized so you can get that done for not much money.

With that said anyone inventing a way to simulate parkerizing for touchs ups stands to make a lot of money. I would do this except for one little thing. I am to dumb. But anyone working in the metal finishing field or chemistry field, I just gave you a money making idea.
