    First shotgun for a lady

Last weekend my friend and his family went to the trap and skeet range and had a great time. My friends mom is now hooked and wants a shotgun of her own. She had some complaints about the gun being heavy so we are looking for something lightweight for trap and skeet shooting. Any suggestions? Also something not overly expensive either.

Something in a 20 for sure, but I'd take her shopping, let her shoulder a few different guns and decide for herself what feels best for her.

The youth 1100 or youth 870 would both potentially be good choices. A Mossberg 500 Bantam or 505 might be good choices as well, that also wouldn't break the bank. If all she is going to do is bust clays for now or forever, a simple break action single barrel would be good and light, easy to handle.

A Stoeger Condor in 20 would likely be a good entry level over/under, and those are also reasonably priced.

20ga for sure. Make SURE she can try out quite a few though, part of the weight problem seems to be a LOP that's just wrong for women who often have a shorter stature.... which would normally mean go for the youth models as has already been said.

agree on the 20 GA. my young ones handle a Remington SBR320 O/U in 20 GA. you can get one for under 400. I like the simplicity of the break open action.

Where are you seeing these at? I'm curious to know because I'd like to get one. Remington discontinued the Spartan line in late 2008 and most of the distributors closed out their inventory.

Huh, I read this thread title as "Shotgun for a First Lady"

Before you buy her a 20, let her shoot some 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 dram 12's. When first getting into trap, my girl ran out ond made me buy her a 20. 2 months later she was looking for a 12. Let her see if she can handle the recoil of a 12 first. Mine tried various automatics for the lighter weight, and reduced recoil. She could not find any she liked. After finally talking her into trying my browning O/U she was sold. Even though it is about 9 lbs she quickly found that in skeet, that heavy of a gun was not all that bad. She rests the broke open gun on her foot in between shots. She recently picked up her own browning. Cynergy classic trap adjustable, and could not be happier.

There are a few really good guys on here that are down south that shoot trap. I am sure they will chime in at some point. Most of them have various shotguns, and I am sure will gladly bring a few out to the range so she could try them out. Also most guys at the range will let you try anything they have. Buy once, Buy right, Be happy. Dont just buy the one that looks nice.

Might be a good place to start if close enough.
Why is everything good???? Illegal, Immoral, fattening???
