    What pump should I get?

I've always been an auto-loader fan, but am thinking about an HD pump. Are there any pump guns that if the trigger is held down will fire as the pump is cycled? That's what I want.

    Slam Fire SG's

Almost all new shotguns will have a disconnect feature that does not allow the hammer to follow if the trigger not released. Winchester comes close with their guns that unlock with back pressure on the forend when the trigger is pulled.

To get a slam fire gun you may have to seek an older shotgun. Remington model 12 or Wincherster '97's both capable of slam firing. I do not know if Norinco's copy of the 1897 does it or not. Disconnects are there for a reason. If slam firing was the fastest way to get lead on target, I imagine all the manufactures would offer their guns with this feature.

I have slam fired my Winchester 1897, it wasn't any faster than my Mossberg 500 and it wasn't what I'd call accuracte fire either.

Try looking or searching shotgun world's forums, they may have some better info.

The defender is probably capable of being the fastest of newer pump actions, but the operator still has to do his part. I will stick tho my rem 870 though it is plenty fast for me.

        Uh... why?
        Get a semiauto.

The 1897s sold by Norinco and Cimmaron should fit your bill. BTW, check out this video -

Herb Parsons, the renown Winchester exhibition shooter from the 1950's shot the win. model 12 faster than any auto ever !! He would hand throw seven clays up and break all before they hit the ground. The fastest pump ever made !! You can hold the trigger down and pump and it will shoot as fast as you can close the action. I have won many bets against autos with my model 12. JKD

Slamfiring is a terrible "feature." ND's are way, way too easy to happen, and the last thing you want is to either blow a hole in the wall when you're chambering it, or worse, into a hostage when you're just trying to jam another round in the chamber. It's not been on most pumps for a reason.

Learn to pump on the recoil, and you'll be faster and more on target. KISS FTW.

Here's my thoughts on the 37. Good gun when they work right. Problem with them is their timing must be perfect. With wear they will start dumping live rounds out with the spent hulls. This is one of the reasons why law enforcement went away from the 37's in the first place. I don't trust a gun that throws it's empties out the same hole you load the the full ones in from.

Just my observations over the years, yours may be different. That's why they make all those different models of scatter guns... Next SG for me is a Saiga.

Mine is a little different...I've had 5 'over the years', still have 'em. 3 of them have at least 5k rounds through them, the other 2 probably a little over 8-9k.

I'm not seeing a issues with feeding, ftf's, fte's, or dumping live rounds out with the hulls. Ever.

I also have a couple of Browning Upland Specials in 12 and 20 gage, they've killed a bazillion birds. No issues with them either.

If, in fact, cops dumped the 37 because of mis-feeds, could it have possibly been because of lack of basic maintenance??

I'd select another 37 with no problem, but I'd check it for function before purchase, just as I would any other weapon.

The Ithaca 37's will shoot if you hold the trigger down when you pump. You can pickup a older on cheap or there are new ones available. I have newer own one but the reputation on the 37's are spotless, so I don't think you can go wrong with those.
